    Gents,

What are the benefits of joining one of these societies, and if there is any who is best to join?

From a quick google I would seem to have a choice between the Irish deer society, wild deer Ireland, or the deer alliance. Any others?

to be honest you dont much if any benefit. from the wdai you get updates and emails of relevant news and events but with the ids you dont get alot they seem to be losing members while the wdai seems to be growing. having been in both and after leaving both i would only go back to the ids. hope this is of help to you

    WDAI Carcass Handling Seminar

The Wild Deer Association of Ireland next Carcass Handling Seminar will take place on Sunday February 12th at 2pm in Cahir, Co Tipperary. Below are details of the seminar schedule.

The venue will be sign posted on the day which is beside Cahir Castle in the centre of the town. We would encourage members to bring as many fresh deer carcasses as possible, including the pluck for examination.

The Skill and Knowledge of Carcass Handling is something that we all require new or old to Deer-Stalking, and the committee would like the support of all members for this event.

Non members are welcome when accompanied by a paid member. There is no charge for this event and outstanding membership can be paid on the day.

    Schedule
2.00pm - Disease identification and general deer health - John Murray, Dept. of Agriculture
3.00pm - Carcass Preparation and Home Butchery - David Dunne, Game Butcher and Deer Stalker
4.00pm - Advice and information on Lymes Disease prevention for Deer-Stalkers will also be provided - Tick Talk
4.30pm - Advice and Information on Deer Stalking Dogs - Tom Hynes and various deer stalkers

A Venison BBQ and hot refreshments will be served

    Warm clothes recommended

    How much??
This one other thing that gets me about these..All the talks and tests etc are always concentrated in one part of the country!! If they want to be taken seriously ,these organisations need to do a talk/course in each three provinces or major city on a rotating basis.Thats not too bad for me to drive to,still a day gone on it..But its a bit for lads say from Donegal or Louth.:(

no they dont get you permissions you still have to do that your self. it is no big deal. for example yesterday while it was raining my self and 4gun drove around to some farmers that bordered our existing permission. we got 4 new permissions and shot 3 deer .
you need to get off your ass and talk to the farmers if you want new permissions.

you dont need to be a member it is open to everyone. it is run by volunteer members of the club for anyone who is interested in learning about carcass handling.
its for your own good :D

poula its not open to everyone if ya read it off there site its open to members only
or members can bring a non member with them
ya cant just show up by yourself and attend

also lads its only 20 euro to join for the year it doesnt exactly break the bank
and at least there trying to highlight issues about all the things good and bad that we chat about here ie poaching new laws etc

and as mentioned the seminars they hold are very informative for anyone thats into stalking or looking to get into deer stalking

the easiest part of deer stalking is shooting the animal the work only starts once the deer hits the ground
from gutting to getting to the vehicle
then removing the head legs etc skinning then breaking down the carcass
    for eating
ive been shooting deer a while now and i still learn something new everytime im out

and for the sake of 20 euro to come down and see this been done correctly
its well worth the money in my opinion
ya can watch all the youtube videos in the world but ya wont get a reply to anything ya might want to ask
where as when its been done in front of ya you can ask all the questions ya like

Went again this year to the Wild Deer Association of Ireland Deer Carcass Handling in Cahir, I agree with the guys it was an excellent event, they covered everything from skinning, TB and Butchery and I particularly liked the tracking dogs for Deer Stalking fair play to all involved!

I think they are the only ones organising events for us and fighting our corner, the rest talk about it but do nothing! I notice the NARGC are now calling themselves a Deer organisation haha what next with them! they might do gun clubs well and splash around some money in the courts but what event have they ever organised for deer stalkers?? What have they ever done to help Deer Stalkers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭sako75 hunter

Dont think the NARGC know anything about deer and rifles. Went to a profiency course thing in clarihan or somewhere a year or two ago. Me brother had to do it to get his shotgun so i just tagged along and done it to. Anyways at the end of the day day when everybody was having a chat and that we went up to one of the lads that was over it and started to ask him about deer shooting and various different cailbres the way ya would talk to anyone with an interest in shooting. He looked at me like i had two heads, he hadnt a clue, the lad beside him was the same and he was well up in the ranks in the NARGC. I think from what ive sen so far they should stick to gunclubs (i am a member of one) or if they are going to firearm handling courses anymore they should let someone who has experience in all types of shooting weather it be deer stalking/pheasant/rabbit or pigeon. There more to shooting than just shotguns and phesants.

There are a number of deer stalkers in NARGC clubs, I know of at least 4 in my area. In fairness the proficiency course as you pointed out aren't aimed at deer stalking its aimed at the bread and butter gun club member who shoots ducks, pheasant, rabbits foxes and clays. It lasts 1 day, it is aimed at young shooters and is supposed to give the basics. Life is all about choice attend or don't attend. The HCAP is test for Deer Stalkers to prove proficiency is it not?;)

Conversations around the NARGC and may I add other Societies and Associations all fall under the "What have the Romans ever done for us" sketch in the life of Brian. When you look at associations and societies in Ireland, you will find another excellent sketch within the Life of Brian, this time its in relation to the "Judean Peoples front or was it "The Peoples front of Judea"

If you think that its only shooting sports this happens in professional organisations as well.

Im in a NARGC gun club. I know how long the course is i done it :). Aimed at young shooters that only use shotguns??? Is there no young lads or lassies up your direction using rifles??? I no down my way theres plenty of youngshooters who just use .22lr/.17hmr for rabbits and dont even use shotguns...... Should it not be the NARGC obligation to provide these young shots "The basics of firearm handling" weather it be a shotgun or rifle, No? Dont get me wrong i know the NARGC have helped out alot of people with licence refusals and they are good to give legal advise but i think these courses they provide should cover all aspects of firearms weather you shoot with a shotgun or a rifle. Thats just my opinion on the matter.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,070 ✭✭✭cavan shooter

it might be that you cant cover in 1 day all the basics of both shotgun and rifle, however it gives the basics of firesrm safety, legislation, quarry identification and safe gun handling. I see thre is one in cavan soon, i might go.
