Hi everyone. I'm looking for some advice if you can help. Myself and wife moved into a house 6 months ago. I have just realised our meter is not moving and I thought great free gas for life. However I'm worried they might try back date it.. has anyone experienced this before.. thanks Dave

    What would a magnet do??

A well placed magnet is supposed to slow it down! That is fraud of course!
Did you give the gas board a meter reading when you first occupied the house.

How interesting. I'll look when its a bit brighter.. I have had a few gas meter reading guys call over and phoned it in too. Never looked at bill too deeply as was 12 euro for two months ( standing charge ).

That's as far as that discussion goes please, we will not be discussing any means of interfereing with or tampering with any installed metres as that would be illegal.

    Back on-topic,

A faulty gas meter isn't something I'd be keeping quiet about. In fact any part of the gas installation which is faulty needs to be inspected/serviced/changed as soon as it is detected.

My advice, if you're after detecting a problem or fault in your installed gas equipment, get it seen to asap or it will come back to bite you one way or another.

I'd never interfere with a gas supply.. checked and there is no magnets about.. looks like its just not recording.. I'll probably just tell them.

Sorry for bumping, but I have the same issue, it's possibly been going on for over 2 years. We are in the house over 8 years, we had the boiler replaced over 3 years ago.

We had been getting 'normal' bills but the meter has only moved around 200 units in the past 2 years, which seems like only a month/2 month's usage.

This was an oversight on our part, but I want to know where we stand with Bord Gais. I have no doubt we will owe them money, possibly quite a lot. How will they assess our usage over the prior 2 years? Will they agree to a payment plan?

Are all your bills estimates or readings.
If the readings are made by a meter reader then you're OK.

    A mix of both.

But when I read the meter myself this evening, we have used 2 units since their (Bord Gais) last reading in December. That just doesn't seem right.

If I call Bord Gais and tell them this, I assume at least they will send someone to fix the meter and going forward everything will be fine.

But, what about the past few years?

Well if the fault is their meter then they are in no real position to charge you as they will be unable to prove how much gas you used, but you say that you are getting "normal" bills?

Are you comparing the bill with a neighbour or something?

I agree they won't be able to prove anything, but I would be amazed if they just installed a new meter and left it at that.

Yes - and to the bills were were getting previously.

If the gas meter is being read by a meter reader and you're getting bills that appear to be correct, I don't see what the problem is.

Are you sure that you're reading it correctly?

We have our gas heating on for heating and water for at least 5 hours a day during the autumn/winter. We have it on for 5 hours for hot water only during the summer. We use gas for cooking daily. Our bills suggest we are not using any gas. This has been going on for a few years. This is not correct.

The meter is faulty. How and why it has happened I have no idea, we certainly didn't tamper with it.

Anyway, if I want to report a fault with the meter, who do I call?

I'm woth Bord Gais for supply, do I need to report to them or Bord Gais Networks?

I would imagine that it would be the Networks team http://www.bordgaisnetworks.ie/en-IE/About-Us/Contact-Us/
