Penalty Point Query

    Hi All,

Hope this is the right area for this.

I got stopped by a Garda speeding in one of these special 50kmph zones a week or so back. He told me that it would receive notification of an €80 fine in the post. I asked him were there penalty points involved and he said that there would not be. I even double confirmed with my friend that was in the car with me.

I received the notification in the post today and low and behold there's 2 points when I pay the fine.

Can I assume that what the Garda said means nothing?

im guessing so. i was stopped two weeks ago for not coming to a full stop at a junction. garda never hinted that i was getting done for the offence, no mention of a fine or points, he just said to be more mindful of stopping at junctions from now on. got the penalty in the mail this morning - 80 quid and 2 points. So now after 4 years free of points i have recieved 4 points within the space of a week (speeding...fair enough). :(

    Not a thing.
No such thing as a fine and no points for speeding, they go hand in hand unfortunately.

Not sure how special you think a 50kmph zone is because they are everywhere !! Town limits

As for what the garda said, he must have been grinning for a week after telling you that and you believed him.

I'll put it down to ignorance as I luckily don't usually find myself in these situations!

Yeah but they are called "special" for whatever reason. N1 there coming from the airport towards Whitehall.

At a guess, maybe the Garda didn't mention the points so as not to inflame the situation, taking the easy way if you like, not really fair but what can you do?

    Yeah this is it exactly.

I don't condone speeding so I'll take my medicine. Still get wound up though by those 50 kmph zones that are way outside of town. Suppose they're there for a reason and not just a random decision.

What kind of a guard is too afraid to tell someone they're after doing something wrong and are in trouble for it?

In todays non-confrontational world of face-saving, being nice in person and then back stabbing when you're a safe distance away from the person a good telling off by the guard would have more effect than the fine+points themselves.

Maybe it is that the guards themselves know the particular 50km zone is for revenue-raising and trying to go about it in the nicest possible way
