dell problem unmountable boot volume

I have a dell inspiron 510m laptop. Windows will not start and I get a blue screen with unmountable boot volume on it. Tried to start in safe mode but it keeps going back to blue screen. Tried using all the F keys and the delete button as advised on various sites but does not work.

Any suggestions or is it a lost cause? Not very tech minded but can do a few things.

i presume it's windows XP you're running on it?

as an aside, i have an inspiron 510m here myself, and after XP service pack 3, it became too slow to work with, so i downloaded and installed linux mint on it, still slow, but not slow enough that my young lad doesn't get good use out of it.
