    Evening folks.

My sister in law is thinking about a Hyundai Coupe with a budget of 2.5k.

What are peoples opinions on these and what must one look out for one. Do they give any bother..

    Cheers.

Probably doesnt need to be said that they're all show and no go.

I'd be looking to make sure all keys work, the remote locking works, the BCM on these is a common fail.

Make sure sunroof is working and that the frameless windows aren't rattling

Mechanically, I don't think there's a whole pile goes wrong with then,

Disagree strongly....worst electrics of any car I've ever seen, cooling system is very poor, done two cylinder heads in past year on two different ones, if the boss takes one in as a trade in, it's straight on to a trade sale or sold as seen.....personally I'd avoid...much better makes of coupe out there for that money...

I had a Coupe for a few years. I quite liked it. But it did have niggles. There was quite a bit of road noise. Maybe that was just my tyres. The hatch rattled alot, over almost every bump. It tramlined quite a bit. Again, I think this was the tyres though.

The BCM had just been replaced before I bought it. But that in and of itself isn't a good sign.

A colleague at work has a 1.6 model .... and she hates it. Mostly because she finds the MPG a little on the low side.

But if you're prepared to live with its foibles, it's a good looking, cheap and decent motor.

02 On model is a piece of crap.

Older model from 97-01 are decent and give feck all problems.

Make sure it has an Nct and some service history.

    How about a Puma Corkie?

Pretty much a Fiesta underneath, parts are plentiful and cheap, as is servicing. Entertaining to drive too. Should be able to pick up one of the rare models with the 1.7 litre engine on her budget.

A bit if hard haggling on this:

The pre 02 model is a dogs dinner visually, and the interior is dire.

I don't think they're as bad as they're being made out to be, I used to work in a Hyundai main dealer and by no means were they a common sight in the workshops.

Lack of maintainance at this age may well cause issues.

There aren't that many rival coupes in that class that have a 1.6 engine for €2500 that isn't from the 90s.

Check for cam chain rattle at revs of 1500 to 2000, also as stated earlier for servicing, they can suffer from sludge problems. the 1.6 are terrible but the 2 liter are decent enough and somewhat agricultural in engine design.

My sister has had one for years and no problems with it.
Not too keen on the inside, very cheap / plasticky looking dash.

I thought they had cam belts?

I sit corrected. I had the V6 engine which was strangely enough cam belted. It also had a very short interval. Something like 80k kms.

Personally I prefer the Mark 1.Its not as bad looking as the newer model.

Likewise--we very rarely if ever saw them in for anything other than services.

Mine flew through the Nct (except for emissions) with only minor attention needed--bushes and drop links.

That engine always had a rattle in the cam chain even as they were driving out of the showroom :)

You never ever had to change the chain or even attend to it.

It was just a "feature" of the engine taht made it sound "agricultural" as someone else said earlier :D:D:D

Same engine was in the Elantra,Lantra and the 1.6 accent that wasnt really sold over here.

The 1.6 is decent enough if youre on a budget and want decent enough fuel consumption.Ive worked out that Im getting roughly 40-45 mpg on motorway driving and 28-30 around town. Not too bad and about the same as teh Elantra I had before this.

They have a belt and a chain. The chain links the 2 cams together and the belt is like your normal timing belt.

Sounds a bit high in my opinion. The coupes a 10 year old car worth at most 1200-1500 euros not the 2.5k that hes looking for.
Theres cheaper better options out there.

    Heres one Id consider
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2961882
    and another
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2542204

    Both under 1500 euros.

Ah a little girl racer so :D:D

Still think his price is too high though--offer him 500 with the Focus and see if he takes it.

Oh god dont get a gen2, they look awful and have cheap interiors.
they are a lighter car than the newer gen3 2002+ so are a bit more economical and better preformance.

if she has a budget of2.5k and a trade she can get a gen 3 which look a whole lot better and have a really good interior.

ive had mine for 3 years now with very little problems, there very reliable mechanically and any problems there is are relatively cheap to repair and a lot can be done yourself.

the 1.6 isnt the fastest car but it has good torque compared to most 1.6s. expect to get around 35mpg combined and up to 40mpg motorway.

heres a couple, amazing car for the price they sell at. better than all the other coupes around from that time and price imo
