I have discovered just now that Irish Rail customers can finally enjoy having the peace of mind of a 3D Secure facility for the online payments system which is to be introduced very soon, the press release link is shown below.

This would seem to be a seamless operation as I would have realised that is compulsory when undertaking banking transactions to counteract banking transaction fraud. A password is needed to provode secure authentication to your payment information when using the online booking system.

Does it appear to be the norm of other rail companies in Europe?

Rail Europe is taken to have a very minimal approach on it I feel.

3DS shouldn't give customers any peace of mind - it's there to transfer liability from the merchant to the customer. If someone uses your card on a non-3DS website, you ring the bank, dispute the transaction and it disappears from your bill. If the same happens for a 3DS transaction, you suck it up and pay the bill.

3DS is just about the worst thing that has ever happened to Irish Customers.

As markpb points out it transfers liability from the merchant to the customer.

Also it makes making online purchases far more difficult and often leads to failed transactions.

This is a very disappointing development.

OP, just an observation, but you're forever touting the achievements of Irish Rail. What's the deal? Not that I believe in knocking them at every turn, but it's like they could fart and you'd praise them.

3D Secure for me means I cannot complete the tranaction because no matter how many times I reset the password it always says it is wrong. Nothing more surprises me from these disgusting hypocrites in the banks.

    durrr, banks are bad m'kay.

never mind that it's the payment processors and card companies doing it, but anyway...

I had this problem before. No matter what I did, it wouldn't accept my password when I went to set it up. I eventually rang them and they said "oh yeah, that's because we don't have your mothers maiden name"

So, when I entered in details like my mothers maiden name (which *of course* I knew) their records said it was wrong and refused to proceed. The fact that they didn't know the answer didn't seem to stop them asking the question. Stupidology.

So, having determined this, how do you think they progressed the issue ? They asked me for my mothers maiden name over the phone and populated it into their system. Remember, they had no idea that the person on the phone claiming to be zag actually was zag, but they happily took my answer over the phone.

    It's a mess.
