    Hi,

Playing Waterville for the first time next week. Are there any specific tips? Any blind holes or blind dangers etc? I've played links a fair bit but never there.

    Thanks!
    Loire.

    Jealous.
Have only played it once and that was on a beast of a late October day with the kind of sideways rain that hurts but it was a fantastic experience. 11th (tranquility) is my favourite par 5 on any course I've played. My tee shot on 18 landed closer to America than to the fairway even though I aimed it as far left as I though possible (well, it cleared the beach and landed in the sea at least 300 yards off line)... par 3s were 3 iron, 3 wood and driver, all only made the front fringes even though the holes were only 160ish as far as I remember.
I remember the first being a straight enough prospect that made you wonder a little about the fuss but it quickly got very interesting!
    Enjoy.

Yes the first is know as "the last easy", for the most part it's all out in front of you and the strokesaver has aerial photos and is very detailed, but playing it for first time alot of the holes look very intimidating from the tee, but it's only after playing it a good few times you realise there is alot more room then it initially looks.
That's the beauty of a great links imo, and Waterville has it all.

It's the most difficult course i have ever played. Only played it once a couple of years ago. The very mention of the place still puts a shiver down my spine. I'll play it again someday. As its been already mentioned the 1st is called 'the last easy" let that be your first and only warning.

Never played there but Jesus, this sounds fairly ominous!

Good luck Loire, hope you enjoy it.

You'll hear all sorts of stories, best to keep an open mind, especially when you're not familiar with the ability of the person giving their opinion.

Just enjoy it. One of my favourite courses on these isles. The par 5 11th/12th (I can never remember which) is one of the greatest holes in golf, it's just perfectly designed.

Actually 1 tip I have is ignore the stroke index of the holes. The index 18 was the par 3 16th/17th (I think) last time I played there about 10 years ago. I stood on the tee and seen a smallish green surrounded by dunes off the back and to the left and right and about an 80 foot (if not more) drop short of the green into cabbage and thought index 18, interesting. Looks like if I miss the green a 4 is a good score but I'd take a 6!!!

Waterville is one of the spots on Earth God obviously favoured. It's magnificent.
I've played it three times and walked it with about 50 people following Tiger and his entourage many years ago.

    Enjoy it.
