    Hi All

I currently have a popcorn hour a-100 in one room (RoomA) and a HTPC with Media Center 7 in the other room (RoomB), currently my A-100 isn't working too well so I was looking for a replacement,

I was thinking of replacing it with a newer Popcorn Hour but am interested in the xbox as a media center extender, what are peoples thoughts on a xbox as an extender?, does it work well, I was hoping to access the channels that I have in RoomB and stream recorded TV, also does it play Full HD mkv movies like the HTPC in RoomB?

    Regards
    Stackeye

I love my xbox, but it's a total disaster when it comes to streaming media over your own network. It's pretty picky about formats, and seemed to be very fussy about whether it would work at all when I tried it numerous times. Also, it doesn't play MKVs natively, you have to use some kind of transcoder running on the source. It's terrible.

    Hi Stackeye,

I will just chip in and give you my two cents.

I use Windows 7 with my xbox 360 as a media extender, it took a while to get the codecs right on Windows 7 and once I did I was away in a hack

I have yet to see a file that it won't play and I use a mix of MKV's and avi's and have no problems.

So last year I bought one of those HP Microserver, I stuck a satellite card into it and using DVBLogic connected edition I have Freesat TV shared around my network and have the DVBLogic client installed on my Windows 7 HTPC.

This allows me to watch the media I want on my xbox as well as live tv too, so the likes of BBC1,2,3,4,HD and ITV etc.... so overall I would be a fan :D

Well I hope this helps, I know a bunch of lads in work use Mediaportal but it is something akin to black magic to get it working right

    Cheers J.
