So went out to car to turn it on a bit before was due to leave this morning but got locked out of it now. Remote doesn't seem to open it when ignition is turned. not sure how i locked it tbh must have done the button.

Anyway can you think of any ways I can stop the engine.

I've tried to see can i get bonnet open, no joy, the cable that pops it is covered, I tried twisting it a bit to see but didn't work.

Tried covering the exhaust but no luck there either, think might have small leak elsewhere in exhaust system.

Someone is on the way out anyway to help, but be nice to be able to stop wastinf fuel.

    Where are the keys now?

It's not clear from your post?

Key in the ignition, engine running. I've the remote. Spare key in Dublin I'm in limerick.

As I say I've called and someone will be out to get it open but just if anyone knows a way I can force it to cut out or that to stop burning away fuel, I know on idle it won't burn too much anyway but still be nice to stop it burning any.

What would covering the exhaust do?

You need to get a locksmith to open the door.

    Yellow pages.

Or - I heard every skanger in Limerick has a key that'll open a '97 Civic

On some cars you could pull the leads from the distributor from underneath if the car was safely supported.

MY question is not of much assistance to the OP but is this legal in Ireland? In the UK it's the offence of quitting a vehicle.

have you got fully comp insurance? if so you'd could have breakdown cover they would send some one out to try and open it

Covering the exhaust should, AFAIK, cause the engine to cut out by building up the back pressure.

Man just came and got it open anyway, locksmith wanted to charge 70 to do it this guy did it for 30 with two blow up bag to slightly wedge door open and a nice long bit of wire.

In terms of quitting a vehicle don't see how it would be illegal, maybe if on a public road but in a driveway can't see it being illegal.

Thanks for all the replies anyway. Wonder how much fuel two hours of idle is, needle doesn't seem to have moved anyway.

Must be the season for it, I was coming out after an NCT last night and a man had locked himself out of a Micra K11C with the engine running. Or rather the central locking had gone a bit mad and locked when the door closed.

Another time it happend a lad in work once with a new model Discovery, got out at a rather busy entrance to a large factory to hand back a security badge, went to get back in but it had locked itself, with engine running. Eventually got the spare key to him but had caused a fair oul truck jam!:D

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I have two keys and yesterday 10 minutes before the end of work I decided to turn on the engine, heat up the car, clear the windows etc. Then locked the door with the second key. Ten minutes later walking out in the cold heading towards the car I was happy to get into a bit of heat but when I stepped into it the car was freezing, one of the mechanics plugged out the crankshaft position sensor and cut the engine. A very cold drive home.
    The bastard:D
