Hotel Constanza is a nice place not far from Plaça de Catalunya, and very reasonably priced.

Stay in these hotels when I was in BArcelona.

They are sister hotels and are next door to each other.

They are jsut around the corner from the square.

    (Link to map http://g.co/maps/3hjz7 )

There is a nice coffee shop in El Triangle and there is a starbucks beside the hotel regina.

If you are going into the city from the Airport you can get the bus straight to the square.

It is 5 minutes walk from the bus stop to the hotels.

Here are another couple I like:

The later is a bit furter out, but in a nice area and access is good to other parts of the city.

Hire a scooter down at the beach and buzz around, great fun.

I'd thoroughly recommend Catalonia Ramblas Hotel http://ramblas.barcelonahotels.it/. Their own website is not great, check them out on Tripadvisor http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g187497-d623246-Reviews-Catalonia_Ramblas-Barcelona_Catalonia.html.

We stayed there for a few nights last October. Spacious rooms with comfy beds, good shower and the reception staff were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast buffet is really good.

It is about 20 steps away from Plaça de Catalunya and ideally placed for exploring Barcelona particular the gorgeous gothic quarter.

My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Turin a few years ago. It's on a side street just off Las Rembalas. Very central & quiet location. And a nice price.

Hotel Olivia plaza is a fantastic hotel, very modern and comfortable, and overlooking plaza catalunya, so right in the middle of the action. They have great rates there off peak and if you ask nicely they will reserve you a room on the higher floors and overlooking the plaza. The rooms at the front have floor to ceiling windows so you wake up to this:

Have stayed in BCN many many times and have never found a better hotel for a weekend break!

Arc La Ramblas hotel is right in the heart of the city and very reasonable in comparison to other hotels in the area. Perfect base for exploring Barcalona on foot
