    Hi all,

Quick query with regard to the Ferguson Ariva 120 Saorview/Freesat combi box (or similar).

Can I record an Irish channel through the box and watch another Irish channel at the same time if I have a saorview tv.

I have read that you can only record Irish channel and while watching freesat channel or vice versa, but if my tv has saorview built in can i do the above or do all signals have to go through the box?

Basically, I am looking for a sky+ set up with freesat / saorview system.

    Thanks..............

Yes, you can of course watch a Saorview channel on a tv with a Saorview compatible tuner while recording another on another device.
I have installed combis with mpeg4 TVs for this very reason.
The other advantage is not having to switch sources between the tv tuner and the satellite receiver when flicking through channels.

    Great stuff Rippy.

Looks like this is what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on this particular box or alternatives?

Only major drawback with the ferguson combos are tuning in the boxes which take a while but a few people have channel lists done which you can use to get all the freee channels.

Also the ferguson box does not have MHEG5 and so will not display digital teletext but will give u analog text that is available until oct. Also epg is unstable.

The triax combo again has problems with the EPG and is a nitemare to tune properly again some people can supply you with a channel listing that is done. The triax combo does have MHEG5 and so will give u digital teletex. This box has reported issues which are mostly software caused.

There are others available such as the Xoro but I have only used the Ferguson and Triax combos myself...

Think its worth a shot for a good price ~€100. Are you using a mains powered hard drive or just usb powered?

both will work with either but I would personally advise using a drive under 500mb formatted in FAT32 format otherwise you will have problems.

    Thanks for advice.

Just need to find the best deal and try it out. Spotted it on TVTRADE.IE as well as Smart CX61 Combo Receiver. Pretty much the same machine so will do some research and order one or the other.

    Thanks again.........................

The Ariva manual specifically states you should use a HDD with its own power supply.

    Hi Guys.

Can anyone tell me a suitable hard drive to buy for recording. I don't need huge capacity, but all the mains powered ones are big and expensive.

I have a maxtor one touch mini with a dual USB on it, Can I use a USB adaptor and plug this into the mains (ie. plug for ipod usb charger)?

Have the system set up and running, using the Ferguson Ariva 120 and a Maxtor One Touch Mini 120gb.
I reformatted the portable hard drive to NTFS, and used the Y-cable supplied with it to connect to mains power (via a universal USB 5v power lead with female USB connection).
No problems tuning in the box and the record, pause live tv etc. function works fine so far.
The user interface and menus etc. on the Ferguson are a bit quirky, but I'm sure I'll get used to it, and pretty good for the price.
Total spend : Preprogrammed box €99, USB power lead €9 and already had the hard drive, not bad.

Anyway, THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR ADVICE AND INFO.

It's nothing to do with the wind unless you have an external aerial that's ready to fall down.

Post in the terrestrial forum if you want more info regarding reception of the Saorview channels.
