    Hi.

I'm involved with training my local hurling team this year and the coach has asked me to be the statistics man. He wants me to keep track of a number of stats for each player in each game, scores, fouls conceded etc etc, and also stats regarding training. Is there any spreadsheet going around that I could use for this or would I have to draw one up from scratch?

    Thanks.

Try getting on to this guy:

He seems to be the guy doing the most cutting edge GAA analysis, might be able to give you some pointers.

Don't know about hurling, but turnovers are vitally important in football.

Thanks, will try that. Turnovers would be important too, basically everything that can influence a result is what we'll be looking at.

Im doing stats for my college team currently.

Have Goals, Points, Wides, Balls Short, Turnovers Won, Turnovers Lost and Kickouts Won.

Also have seperate sections for the Goalkeeper on top, with Kickouts; Won Left, Right and Middle, and Lost Left, Right and Middle, and Saves.

Its not comprehensive but its decent enough. Im considering changing balls short, to fouls, because its a rarity that balls are left short at this level, and im begining to see fouls as an important stat.

TBH you can't take every stat from the game, so just pick what you consider important and go with that.

Running stats sounds like a tough job, fair play to you. Next thing now we will have white boards like in basketball/american football, sure what harm!

Have you covered many games so far?

6 so far so not much.

You learn tonnes about the game from it.

Stats can't tell the full story either. We had a Trench Cup game on Tuesday, and from the stats every player played well and beat their man.

However we conceded 4 goals and only won by 2 points! It just taks one small mistake from even your most experienced player, to put you in the sh1te.

Lucky our forwards were on fire and kicked 1-21 :P

To have a really effective stat analysis, I'd imagine you'd need 3 lads all coveing different aspects. Some of it even comes down to personal opinion, for example: good pressure on a man forcing him to kick the ball out of play is a turnover in my book, but to someone else it isn't.

The problem is you can sometimes get too into a game and miss things! Its tough but I love it.

Its very funny talking to people after the match, and they will say "So-and-So had a good game didn't he, and i'd look and see 2 Turnovers won and 4 lost and think... really? :P "

Best stat is the kickouts. You can see where you are productive and either make a switch or just heavily rely on that side for the rest of the game.

Six is too small a sample to tell anything much obviously, but keep an eye over time to see if any particular stats correlate particularly strongly with match results.

I suspect over time you'll see that a team who has a decent edge on turnovers never loses, and that if they do their attacking efficiency will be unusually low.

Loads of different ideas can be taken from http://ulster.gaa.ie/coaching/articles/development/ - scroll down to the performance analysis piece, could help you put together your own template

If you have an ipad, try dartfish easytag, works on the iphone too but the larger screen on the ipad makes it more legibile. works well for team based stats but i havent figured if there is a way to use it on an individual basis yet

If you have an iPhone have a look at http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/tagit-gaelic/id333210270?mt=8&ls=1

I am pretty sure there is a similar app for android.
