I have an agri diversification idea that I'm thinking of applying for Leader funding for, I'm just wondering has anybody on here applied to Leader before, were you successful, what were your overall experiences?
    Thanks

it needs to be pretty special to get a grant at the moment. you need a fool proof business plan just think of the dragons den only on paper with everything.

Spoke off the record to one of the assessors a few weeks ago, he thought that my idea would displace another employer in the area, (I think it wouldn't), I have done nothing more on it since.

That seems to be their first response to a lot of people. I got the same answer but I dont think my business would put others out of work either so Im busy getting a business plan together. Im aiming to work together to form a solid network of interdependent businesses as opposed to being in competition with each other.

I think you should give it a shot and prove em wrong. You probably owe the idea that much.

so the person you spoke to from leader thought you might steal business from a similar type service provider , sounds like something a doctors lobby would come out with , to hell with protectionism

LEADER uses taxpayers money to (among other things) create jobs. What would be the point in giving someone a grant to establish a project, where the grant puts them in a position of competitive advantage vis a vis their competitors, and where every job created in the new project displaces one in the existing project.

It's prudent use of taxpayers money, and absolutely nothing to do with protectionism as you call it!

My advice is to get someone who has done it before to help you with a business plan and the Leader application. They are crazy about red tape so every ‘t’ has to be crossed and every ‘i’ has to be dotted. Your application will be evaluated by a board but the decision will probably be made long before it gets that far.

A negative response and discouragement seems to be common so you will have to be prepared to keep pushing against constant rejection. It is not always the people with the best idea who will be successful but the ones who won’t take no for an answer.

id be of the opinion that LEADER is just another QUANGO which provides jobs for loyal members of various poltical parties , no different to FAS

And of course you'd be entitled to your opinion.

However, as someone who used to work in that sector for a good number of years, I can tell you your opinion is not borne out by the reality.
