Would you be wary of a high mileage tdi in particular? i know high mileage can cause lots of problems, but what if it was looked after well. i know of one for sale near me with a years test, 250,000 miles. should i steer clear? can get it at an extremely good price, and it seems very clean.

what year is it and what make and model of car. if it was a vw passat or audi a4 it would probably be alright but if it was something crappy like a skoda fabia id say avoid. what year is it? what mileage will you be putting on it per year?

How would that work considering they would all probably use the same engine?

OP, if the car has been serviced and maintained properly over it's life then I would have no fears as long as the price was right. :) They are an old diesel engine but well capable of high mileage once looked after properly.

    its 99 vw passat..

Can be got for a bit of a steal, its clean.. just the mileage would put me off a little bit, what with suspension arms and that etc.. surely they'd have been done on a car of this age with this mileage?

    Thanks lads :):)

If you are interested in the car then I suggest getting someone who knows a thing or two about cars to give it a good going over. Get it up on a hoist and poke around underneath.

Ive said it before and ill say it again!!
The oul lad had a skoda octavia 99 1.9TDI and it went to 350miles and the engine was still running when the car went to the scrap yard, because there was a lot of work to be done on everything else!
Not worth putting the money into it.

So yeah when maintained go for i wouldn't be spending big money if work hasn't gone into it to keep it roadworthy, and im not talking passing an NCT a year ago.

Could be a nice car as they carry the miles well but a bit bland in the earlier spec. Has it been modded in any way? Any service history?

Define steal given that donedeal is full of over priced Passats for a comparison

    So is my arse

I'd be inclined to agree that a lot of things would have been replaced at this stage. The other side of the coin is that some of these will be up for replacement again as will other consumables.

    Why is the owner selling?

    Check the

    Electric Windows
    Door Locks
Drive over a speed bump and see if the Windows pop down
    Turbo Noises
    Service History
Any buzzing noises when turning the Steering Wheel (Steering Rack is prone to failure)

Maybe get a mechanic to look at it.

If its running well with nct and dirt cheap sure go for it .
Your taking a chance with most cars second hand .
    I've seen tdi,s with 40,000 **** bolts
It's all down to maintenance .
I've a Octavia tdi with 160,000 m on it going strong

00 Fabia had a pukey Diesel engine. Octy was the good old TDI.

2005 Passat TDI with 185k KMs - no issues.

A VAG TDI engine that is properly maintained is capable of almost infinite mileage. Check the service history before you buy though.

When you say steal, it should be a few hundred euro at the most tbh.
