Hey, Im just wondering if Puerto Madryn is worth going to at this time of year. The buses are very expensive here and im not sure if it is worth coming across from Bariloche for two or three days in and around Puerto Madryn and then going back to the lakes district...

It sounds like a cool area but im thinking I should leave it for another trip.

    Opinions?

Only go if you have your heart set on whalewatching. It's a very unremarkable town.

Yea, I didn't even know it was a place people stopped in. We spent a few hours there before heading further south. Might get better answers on LonelyPlanet as it's a place not many will have been to.

Don't know about this time of year but when I was there in early December it was pretty cool. Lots of whale watching, and there are seal and penquin colonies in Valdes National Park. May not be your thing though. The town itself is pretty boring. We only stopped to break up the trip from Buenos Aires to El Calafate but ended up having a good bit of craic there. The YHA has sound staff and a club round the corner.

If your're stuck for time I would head south from Bariloche to El Bolson. Great scenery and less tourists.

Thanks for the replies! I think il give it a miss since there wont be any whales this time of year although the penguins would be cool.

On a separate note can anyone recommend a decent wine tour in Mendoza or did anyone do it themselves?

    Cheers

    Wine Tours:

If your'e gonna do a biking one (which is mad craic), I reckon they are all gonna be fairly similar. I say this because the "tour" just involves giving you the bikes, a map, and telling the wineries that you are on the way.

Your hostel should organise it for you.

Dont do a tour. Take a bus out to Maipu, rent a bike at Mr Hugo's for 25 pesos for the day, and go cycle yourself from winery to winery. Then when you drop the bike back he sits you down and gives you free wine for the rest of the evening, and you can chill and chat to fellow backpackers. Great fun!
