To my knowledge you can visit Canada for up to 3 months without a visa. To work even for a short time requires a working visa - very hard to get I understand.

If visas are hard to get, then how come so many Irish people have gone to Canada?

Same reason people went to the states? Work black, got a qualified visa (i.e. in an area were they needed people and required a relevant qualification and/or work experience) with a company or had a dual citizenship/spouse to lean on.

Canada is extremely hard to get into legally , ( well then again nowhere is easy ).
I strongly suspect that it's a situation similar to all the thousands ' emigrating ' to Australia - they're all heading off on Working Holiday visas which are of limited value - my guess is Canada is similar.
I know of only 1 person gone to Canada recently - went over as a tourist
