    Hi,

Will be heading to Kenmare soon and will want a round. Would Kenmare be better than The Ring of Kerry or vice versa?

    Thanks,
    Loire.

Depends what you want to get out of a round:

Ring of Kerry (photos) has great views over Kenmare Bay and is a tricky enough track with lots of movement to fairways and greens. Feels open and barren in places, but that's the nature of the surroundings. Challenging enough.

Kenmare (photos) is a gentler affair and on the very edge of town. The old 9 are as relaxed as anything, with big trees and the estuary alongside. The new 9, across the road, are good quality holes with several going up/down a hillside. Plenty of trees here too, but room to play.

If your visit is soon Id be inclinded to try Kenmare, called into ROK recently, place very boggy and didnt look to be in great condition generally. Not sure how much play it gets in the winter months.

I played ROK once, long ago. The greens were so ridiculously unfair I swore I would never darken the place again.

Kenmare is a nice track, and worth playing.

Greens have been redone. They were crazy alright - you couldn't keep a ball on some of them. No wonder they were changed.

The day I played, one of my partners, playing off 4, putted up to 6 inches from the hole. The ball stopped, then rolled back down the slope, off the green and into a bunker.

The 18th, with it's three tiers, was impossible for the ordinary player.

A golfer playing off 4 should know to put the ball past the hole when putting if not in the hole! Never up never in!

Both nice scenic courses and a good test of golf but would need the heart of a mountain goat to play ROK if not using a buggy! Long uphill walks to tee boxes etc. and a lot of climbing.

Neither in this weather. Both courses very wet. Drive an hour in the car to waterville and play a serious course. You wont regret it

You are a star....booked in for Waterville (getting excited already). That's me hitting low irons at the range all next week. :D
Thanks for all the other replies.

Playing the ROK on sunday morning. 14 holes open. Ground isn't solid but work is continuing on drainage etc so its improving all the time.

I carry my clubs and find the course a challenge to walk but it's not as bad as you make out. Stick to the paths and it's enjoyable. In saying that though, fellas I play with insist on getting the motorised buggy alright for the round. Costs €20.

didn't realise it was an option. I've played ROK and Waterville. Different leagues. Enjoy, and take it in. Tranquility is a gem.

You should check out the Killorglin website http://www.killorglinringofkerry.com It has a lot of info on your first stop on the ring of Kerry. The beauty of the ring is that you can drive it in a few hours so you could easily take in most of it. But Personally I would recommend staying around the Killorglin area. You have a lovely sandy beach (Glenbeigh) only a few miles on one direction, and killarney (a lively town) only a few miles in the opposite direction.
You plank, he was asking about golf courses.
