I failed NCT because the square no. plate on the front bumper - Guy told me just switch back to the front and it will be ok. In my opinion there is no space to put a square no. plate on the back in my car and the front fits perfect because it's jap imports celica. any regulations about that?

Square is fine on the front as far as I know once it's of the correct dimensions, 340 x 220mm.

    What NCT centre was it?
My car passed with Japanese shaped plates front and back last month in Northpoint, no problems whatsoever

Yeah sounds like another tester making up his own rules

Its section 1 in the NCT manual http://www.ncts.ie/pdf/nctmanual.pdf

perhaps you were missing the require paperwork ??

Bring it back and demand your cert. Square front plate is perfectly legal once is the regulation size.

Swap the plates around, take it back for visual & swap them back to the way you have them once you get the cert.

    Job done

Even an NCT examiner could spot the defects in that paperwork :D

OP get a tape measure out, if it's the right size as per the NCT manual, go back and demand your cert or an explanation of why the rules have been changed.

The tester was probably trying to meet his quota of a certain number of fails V passes so he failed your car with nothing wrong with it so he could keep his supervisor happy

Before we go lynching the tester can we see a picture of the offending plate?

Possibly it is a smaller than normal one

No, that would only make sense.

No, that would only make sense.

no no no, he said that front plate must be like a long one, not square one. he said: swap around - back to the front and front to the back or get a new long plate on the front and it will be ok. Sounds stupid isn't it? If the square plate was on the car before and it passed NCT 2 years ago obviously so I can't see any problem with a square plate but he does. I can say more to this: plates are standard not modified, no stupid fonts or german style.

Just double check the measurements and then go back with the appropriate page printed from the NCT manual

I have the following plate on the front on my car & it always passed the test (Sligo/Ballina/Westport)

Please put a pic up so we can understand if you are being treated unfairly.

Looks a bit small too me . Compare to Bronson's above which looks correct size.
Tester was wrong to tell you shape was wrong and to swap front to back, but I bet if you dO that you will then be failed for rear plate being too small.
Get a std plate done up for the visual.

I doubt it will fail again.

The tester will just check the front plate is the correct size. The rear has already passed. It's a quick visual exam

I went to mechanic straight away after the test, and said to him the reg. plates situation - he said: plate is ok but those f*** just make a piss on you. So I said: But why?
He said: You drive very nice car and they don't like sports cars in NCT centre.

Did You ever hear opinion like this before? Is that a typical tester behaviour?

Just guessing here, but are you a foreigner by any chance? Could be picking on you for that reason.

Yes I am. BTW I've checked dimensions of my plate and actually it's short of 1cm in length and about 2cm in height. so I decided to buy a new plate [cost 10e] I went to NCT centre for a visual check. Man said that's fine. I showed him the old square plate and asked him: can you tell me is that square plate fine to be on my car? He looked and the plate: Yes it's ok, why? So, I told him my previous story. He said: That's normal square plate and it's good to be placed on your car as well and If you want to solve that issue go to my supervisior and tell him.

It's a sad thing when people this days are making things like that. I know that dimensions were not the same but nobody gives a damn of 1-2cm difference. First guy didn't say that dimensions were wrong - he said swap around front to the back and it's gonna be ok. Useless person.

    Report him.

How many more people are falling things and then going back paying there re-test fee? (I know there isn't a fee for a visual but still....)

Ok, if they are saying now that the square plate is fine, go back and ask for the price of the extra plate you got made.
