    Hi all,
The Almera seems to emitting a high whistle when idle. Same sound as a timing belt going, but car has a chain. It only starts when the engine is fully warm. It goes quiet when I dab the throttle. Any ideas which belt it could be?
    Thanks

Same noise as timing belt? Alternator belt as mentioned above.

Thanks for the replies. Would the alternator belt just be stretched, or could it be case of oil got on it, causing the noise?

Generally they slip when they're worn.

I think the only noise a dodgy timing belt makes is BANG

Relative peanuts to get sorted to be honest, alt belt is less than a tenner probably and any garage will throw it on quite quickly.

    What year is the almera?

The N15's have manual belt tensioners so you can tighten them to compensate for wear/stretch on the belts....however, for the price of a belt, I'd just change them for new ones.

N16 p2 (early '06). Would the alternator only be making noise after the engine gets hot? Everything is dead quiet until the cars been running for a while.

Loose or worn auxiliary belts tend to only make noise when cold. You mention oil getting on the belt, do you have a leak?

Had an 'oil mishap' about 2 years ago and oil went everywhere. It's been making the squealing noise over a year now (it's not excessively loud). I poured a small bit of water on one of the main belts, when the engine was running, and it went away for a while.
