1.8 VVTI or 2.0 Vtec Engine??

    Looking for opinions please:

Possibly buying a new motor in the coming weeks, have had a 1.6 2nd Generation Avensis and am looking at buying another one. Now the 1.6 engine, whilst reliable and generally adequate is no jaw dropper in terms of power. I don't do the miles to justify diesel.

I have been looking at the 1.8 petrol engine option in the avensis around the 2004-2006 age range.

I also have been looking a the 2.0 litre petrol Honda Accord in the same year range. The only big drawback with this is tax.

Are there any ghost stories with either of this engines? - any feedback would be appreciated.

vtec all the way you'll have much more power with it specialy dohc vtec thats what id do the only thing is the 1.8 vvti would be easier on your pocket with tax insurance and lighter on petrol but for extra power definatly the accord

The 1.8 VVT-i has well documented oil consumption issues.

The difference in motor tax between a 1.8 and 2.0 is €68 per year or €1.30 per week.

Have you looked at the Mazda 6?

TBH no, read some poor reviews on the diesel version but never really looked at the 1.8 option

Worth a test drive of one, they are cheaper to buy than an Avensis or Accord and drive better than both. 2005 facelifted model has better refinement and revised interior trim. Petrol models are very reliable.

I've had both and would recommend the vtec.

There will be no running costs differences that I saw (or marginal anyways), tax difference is as mentioned above and the vtec is definitely more powerful!

Had serious issues with vvtl-I. Never ever again. Would never touch another Toyota.

Now have a 2ltr vtech accord. Fantastic. More tax but sod it, more enjoyable and more reliable!

Honda all day long OP and you will buy them very right atm. The Accord is a much more superior car over Avensis..

Had a VVTLi Celica for almost 2 years without literally a single thing going wrong with it. Only thing I changed in that time was the pads and of course I'd keep an eye on the oil but it never was an issue for my one thankfully.

But even with that, I'd probably go for a VTEC for the extra power and they're incredibly reliable.

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone. Some food for thought. All seems to be pointing towards the Honda. The issues re higher tax are not insurmountable. Suprised at the issues with the 1.8 vvti.

Has to be Honda better to drive better speced and far more reliable

The Honda also looks far more stylish. Whether you keep it OEM or with a euro r kit and some decent wheels, it's much more pleasing on the eye than an avensis could ever be.
