    Hi all,
    any advice appreciated.
Car was a bit slow to start last week and 2 days ago it would not start at all and i drained the battery. I gotta jump and it ran fine until this morning. Turning over fine but not firing. Thinking it might be the battery I changed and still no luck. Got a friend to have a look and he said that fuel is getting to the engine, and the glow plugs seem ok. Any ideas what else it might be?

    What year is the 406..?
Is it the 1.9 Td or the 2.0 hdi engine...?

    It's the 2.0 hdi. And 00

Could be glow plugs which heat the air entering engine on initial startup, or the battery.

You need to get it onto diagnostic equipment and see if there are any fault codes logged.
If no codes are logged then check rail pressure..battery voltage..cam/crank sync..immobiliser etc.

I had a similar problem recently on my hdi 90 306 with bosch fuel injection, fuel was getting to the filter etc. but it still wouldn't fire. There are two fuel systems fitted to this engine, early cars like yours usually have a bosch system with a lift pump in the fuel tank, the later cars have a siemens system with no lift pump, instead they have a hand primer in the engine bay.

It turned out to be the lift pump in the fuel tank that needed to be replaced in my case, there weren't any fault codes logged either! The lift pump supplies fuel at around 3 bar, if the lift pump is too weak to provide the necessary pressure to the high pressure 1350 bar pump or if it has seized, then the engine won't fire.

Other problems on this engine should (in theory) log fault codes on the ecu however, so it'd be best to get any codes read first and go from there.

The glow plugs are not critical for starting on this engine as it has direct common rail fuel injection.

    Hope that helps...

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm trying a new fuel filter tonight as I recently emptied the tank!! Failing that I'll go to a garage. Let you know how I got on later.
