there are really excellent : http://www.ayup-lights.com/products/64/

I have a couple of ultrafire lights, put them on the helmet and on the bike as needed. Some people have had theirs break down, so far I've been lucky. That said they could be 4 weeks delivery time... http://www.dealextreme.com/c/bike-lights-and-electronics-1622

Magicshine 808? About €100 delivered, claimed 1000 lumen output and I think 4 hour battery life. They get great reviews. On phone so can't confirm right now.

    Google link for the MJ-808

MJ-872 with 12 month warranty for £89.95 (excluding delivery)

I thinking about getting the 872 myself.

I think the Magic Shines (from Dealextreme) can be a bit "hit and miss" when it comes to quality - if you get a good one they're great but a lot of the lads have had problems with them! Delivery can be very slow too!

The problem is that anything else that's any good for off road use tends to be much more expensive! A lot of the Epic lads use the Hope Vision 2 and swear by them!

I'd be very interested to know how you get on, especially what the run time is.

It charged up in a couple of hours, plugged the battery pack to the light and tried it out.
The light output is savage, like a lighthouse on full output.
There is only full on, dimmed and seizure inducing strobe.
I haven't had a chance yet to check the runtime, will do later today.

Just got a very similar light, 1800 lumenthingys, getting about 3-3.5hrs on full power, light output is, as gman2k put it, lighthouse like. It makes my Electron Terra 2's look like they are candle powered.

Even if it lasts me just this winter it will have been well worth the purchase price.

I would'nt compromise spending on my only light source while cycling off-road in the pitch dark.. always buy the best you can when it comes to things like this..

forget about the lights altogether and get these :
scare the be-jaysus out of everyone else as you go crashing through the forest...

though the auld depth of field (or lack of) might present it's own particular problems.

It took me a while to justify my front Hope Light (about 250 euro at the time) but ever since I haven't regretted it, absolutely brilliant light and use it regularly for commuting too.

Have it about 2 years now and still running well. Also just got a Hope rear light a few weeks back which connects to the front light. Run both on minimum settings while commuting and get almost 5 hours out of them. Really nice mounting brackets and front light goes to flashing for about 25 minutes before battery completely drains giving plenty of warning. Battery is also small enough to carry a spare on the frame.

On full power I get little over an hour. Would recommend making the plunge, try see it more as an investment!

Got that Hope rear light too... can be seen around corners in the dark!

I got the new Hope 4 front and district 3 rear for everything. Might seem like overkill, but I got sick of never being seen (i.e. seen and ignored) by motorists (You know the type that cuts across lanes at high speed - typically to grab a park on the other side - without taking the time to see what's coming).

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cree-XM-L-XML-T6-1600LM-LED-Bike-Bicycle-Light-Headlamp-/270814150565?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Cycling_Bike_Lights&hash=item3f0dc7ffa5#ht_6207wt_894

However, the connection between the light and charger/ or battery pack is a bit wonky on mine, and will need a fixing up job....
But, the light itself works fine, and is very powerful

Very powerful...when it works? ;) I had a look at that ebay link: Judging by some of the comments, it looks like it's a little unreliable, which for a light is pretty important, don't you think? :)

Keeping as much money in my wallet as possible is important too!
That's why I'm willing to take a risk everynow and then:)

All good, but surely you like to see where you're going (You don't want to lose your front teeth/wheel if/when you smack into a pothole! :) ). I'd have though that lights need to be reliable. It's a bit of a false economy buying unreliable lights.
