Hey guys, I know this thread has probably been done a million times so sorry if its a repost of a repost but i was wondering not only what is a good first car but if me being 25 will make a difference?

Im aware most first time drivers are alot younger than me and as such find it very hard to get insured on a nice car. So my question is as a 25yr old, what car could i realistically get insured on without it costing an arm and a leg? Do i have to stick to the insurance group 1 cars or does my age give me some leeway?

    Cheers for any info lads

Get a micra for a year then get rid of it fast once it's given you a year of no claims :D

What kind of money would you consider "an arm and a leg"; what kind of car have you got in mind?

Your age does give you some leeway. I take it you don't have a full license? Do you even have a learner permit?

What budget do you have for car + insurance? (Don't forget tax and petrol/diesel will go on top aswell;))

I wouldn't bother with the micra. I didn't bother with or need a car until I was 26. Decided one day, I'd put some of my savings to use & went looking at Focuses. I knew that they were reliable & myself & a mate went around the country looking at cars. Got a lovely 1.6 saloon, which has never given me trouble. Unbelievably reliable car. My insurance was about 1.2k in the first year. Then dropped to about 800 in year 2, about 500-600 for 2 more years & then went closer to 400 after year 5. I have mates who are driving since they were 17 that are paying higher premiums than me since about year 2. for comparable cars.

Starting to drive later has been a positive experience for me in the long run.

I always assumed it would be the other way around.

Yeah cheers, same as myself, haven't really had a need for a car until now. Yeah i was also looking at Focuses, cheap on insurance i hear. So around the 1.2k is as cheap as i can expect?

I've no idea mate, but I didn't have problems getting my own policy on a 1.6 focus with no named driving experience & a recently acquired provisional at 26. I got the test pretty quick (first time) though. Applied for it the day I got my provisional. Mind you they didn't have that requirement where you couldn't drive alone at the time.

My advice, shop around, and there's nothing wrong with a 1.4 as a first car. Some of my mates never went beyond a 1.4 as they rarely go beyond city limits.

    Octa..

Seriously, you can't really go too far wrong with a well minded Focus.

E36 BMW.... Supposed to be very cheap to insure.
