Wedding Photographer T&Cs?

    Hey,

Myself and my fiancée are looking at hiring a wedding photographer for our up-coming big day. We found a guy who we really like and he’s just about affordable. The only question I have is that in his terms and conditions he states that he can do pretty much whatever he wants with our wedding photos after the event. Now I understand him wanting to put them up onto his website so people can see what his work’s like and that he’s still working, however I’ve a bit of a problem with him having total control to use them as he sees fit. As it seems to be currently stated in the t&c’s he could pretty much do anything, ie. use our photos on innumerable wedding websites to advertise himself or even put us up on a billboard to advertise his services and we’d couldn’t say anything, not even whether we’d agree or not!

Is this kind of wording in the terms and conditions now standard for wedding photographers in the internet age and has anyone else had an experience like this? (good or bad)

    Thanks

I'd suggest moving this to the Photography section.

    This sounds odd.

I'd advise you asking at the Photo forum: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=27 as there's a few people there that take photos for weddings, and may be able to say if this is "normal" or not.

It is pretty normal but you can ask him not too .

Pretty standard stuff, probably could have been worded better. The photographer needs to advertise on their website etc and this is permission to allow this if not then we could only use pictures of models and such which doesnt work

This is pretty normal stuff and similarly any photos you post online must be watermarked to stop other people using his photos and passing them as their own.

yes, I'm afraid this is standard protocol, the photographer owns the copyright to his own work. They're unlikely to put up unflattering or revealing photographs up anywhere, as it would look bad on them and they would not get the business. You probably liked him in the first place because you saw some photos of others' weddings and thought they looked good.
The thing that I would ask about is whether you could have a copyright-free copy of your photos for you to use and print.
