The petrol v diesel debate - Dont just look at the price of either - What is really important is the difference between the fuel consumption of either - Diesel is going to be better, so will be more economical.

I would rather spend a few bob more on motor tax a couple of times a year, and make a saving every time i visit the pumps...

    Good luck

But only under certain circumstances. ie long motorway hops.

IMO, 15K isn't nearly enough miles per year to justify a diesel. at least 20K per year

id get a petrol as they're cheaper to buy cheaper to tax and would not be that much more thirsty, petrol saloons like the volvo s40 would average around 40 mpg while a diesel mondeo would only average about 45 mpg

    Volvo S40 1.6 petrol

I agree that it isn't enough milage to justify a diesel. However if you decide that you do want a diesel I would recommend a Fiat Bravo 1.6 Diesel (eco model). My mother has one, drove it for the first time last weekend. It's quick (105hp) and handles well. Also best looking car in it class imo.

    Petrol - 15k miles a year @ 30mpg average = 500 gallons = c.2270L = €3470.83 @ 1.529/L

    Diesel - 15k miles a year @ 50mpg average = 300 gallons = c.1362L = €2123.36 @ 1.559/L

Prices are at current prices at my local station, giving you a saving of €1347.47.

Perhaps the fuel consumption figures (30/50) may be a bit misleading, but even a 10mpg difference between the two will result in a saving of around €600/year, which will pay the motor tax on a pre 2008 1.9 diesel car.

Where would you be able to find a bravo diesel for €4k?

You left out the purchase price difference between 2 similar cars except one is petrol the other diesel. The petrol model will be cheaper to buy because they are in less demand. Maintenance also hasn't been taken into account. The diesel one may have more mileage on it so may need worn parts changed sooner than a lower mileage petrol version.

Petrol v diesel not just about mpg savings.

No i didnt leave anything out - I'm sure the OP will be more than aware of the price difference as soon as they price the cars - I was simply pointing out something that would not be completely obvious.

Anyway, the OP has a budget of c. €4k, so it's not as if there's gonna be a €2000 euro difference between, for example an 04 diesel passat, and an 04 petrol passat.

Tbh, it is also misleading to say that a diesel car would have higher maintenance cost if it had higher mileage. What if a petrol car had 150k miles, and a diesel had 100k miles? Would the petrol car not potentially have a higher chance of something going wrong in that case?
