Which 4x4 SUV??

I've been kicking round recently looking at SUV's.. SoftRoaders or whatever they are referred to...

Drove a couple of X-trails, I liked them but being a 2.2 the tax is a little extra and lots of folks warn of impending doom of turbo and engine failures..

Santa Fe, great as it's in the 1.9 tax bracket and well spec'd ones are decent enough inside, not as nice a drive as the X-trail.. Have been warned off my by local mechanic as they have diesel leak, injectors, abs problems..

Freelander: haven't driven one but most folks seem to have problems both mechanically and electrically...

So does that bring the list down to the Grand Vitara, I've seen the least complaints about them and on the plus they are a more serious 4X4..
    Poorer MPG figures though..

Appart from the tax being a little high the X-trail really attracts me, selectable 4X4 and a decent drive on the road...

    Anything else I'm missing ??

    Close to or 2.0L diesel..
4X4, as I farm and pull a trailer
    Passenger, for the kiddies..
    Reasonable MPG would be nice...

Oh, yea.. all this for €5K :o

    Any ideas ??

have you considered a pick up? you get five seats, and only €310 tax a year, although mgp will be low 30 would be the average

Might consider that, which would be most reliable and would the mpg be much worse than a vitara?

The Kia Sorrento linked, although a 2.5, is a beautiful bargain at 9.5k

And a very problematic car. I know of three people with them and all have had to have engines replaced.

Xtrail? 2.2 engine is fantastic to drive but not reliable.

For €5k you're asking a lot but something simple like the Vitara, with it's Peugeot 1.9d engine, is probably the way to go. Look at a RAV, also?

Yea a €5k budget is tough...
I had a Santa Fe out but had to return it because there were alot of hidden problems when I got it checked out.. Luck escape and the guy eventually gave the cash back...

Probably going to look at another X-trail at the weekend €4.5K, 98k miles, full service history and 3 months warrenty... Fingers crossed

Subaru Forester is a good option, good on diesel (for a 4x4), almost car like on the road and capable offroad too.

Not on a budget of €5k, he won't!

Are you sure? The one linked to is an automatic. That thread reckons its grand because no DPF / DMF but the manual is not. Although I've seen evidence supporting your stance on www.carsurvey.org.

Also well worth a read http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/owners-reviews/kia/sorento/station-wagon-2003/

Yea, Forester's at this cost would be petrol. Still good but thirsty.

I've gone off carsurvey.org as there are nothing but negative posts on there. If you were guided by that you'd never purchase a car.
I looked up my current Passsat TDI and it gives awful reviews, I'm on my second with only minimal problems.

I'll look at this xtrail and see if it's as good as described in the flesh.
