Anyone checked out the BBC Sport website this morning? They've relaunched with a new layout/design. Looks very cheap and tacky IMO.

    Any opinions?

Everytime a website changes people complain and give out about it, saying it's not as good as the old one. Give it a week or two and you'll forget it was ever anyway different.

Apart from Gawker. That really was a mess.

Cleaner and more modern looking than the old one which is good. Not a fan of the yellow though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

    Don't like it.

Sure I'll get used to it in a week or two though and then the old one will seem weird

yellow. why? it hurts my eyes

dont like it cause im so used to the old. ill get used to it in no time. Its grand.

Bar the excessive yellow, I don't mind it at all. Would be nice if they allowed individual users to customise what they'd like to appear on the home screen and to have an option to change the colour scheme to your desired colour.

    It's horrible

It's fine. Main links at the top are handy. The new table is good with nice features.

Find it a bit too busy....old one was easier to navigate.

Don't like it, especially the fixtures section, they used to clearly separate the game days but now there all on top of each other.

I hate it. Everything's wrong. I can't find anything. I hate the colour. I hate the layout. I'll never ever like it again.

But give me a few days ;)

I feel slightly nauseous and dizzy looking at that yellow:eek:

Looks the same just with yellow instead of red.

    It's pretty straightforward tbh.

It's grand, just takes a little while to adjust to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

It's actually grand. Speaking as a web designer though it's a shame they didn't try for a responsive design. But the way they've set it up now seems to indicate they'll be doing it at some point in the future.

Only things that irk are the banner changing from black to white at the top, and the way lead images in certain articles get cut.

For example, in this article. It looks really, really bad, and ruins every photograph.

    Nice enough IMO.

Now if only someone would drag the RTE version into the 21st century....cutbacks!!!

I don't see what the problem is!

BBC Sport was always yellow and now it's just gone into the same format as the rest of the BBC site.

Like how it uses full width of screen now.

Just give it a while and people will get used to it.

Remember nothing lasts forever except change!

Ah looks terrible messy to me, all over the place, too bright.....my boss might catch me on the site now :(

Any BBC site was ruined ever since they got rid of 606 the site just has nothing more to offer than any other site now.

Agree completely, it looks cack now and it was perfectly fine before they changed it. All it needed was a freshening up.

I actually thought I was missing a CSS file or something because it looks so ****, but obviously not.

It doesn't. It's a fixed width design (which is really bad practice imo).

Overall I find it more tabloidy, trying to grab you with the latest headlines, but more difficult to find something you actually need.

Not to mention the colours are just wrong from a usability perspective, the yellow is too bright but the green is too pale. The yellow distracts you, whereas the pale headlines make it actually difficult to make out the content on the page.

That f***ing video that kept playing every time you refreshed the live text updates tonight was beyond annoying.

Why on earth would you be refreshing live text updates when it does it for you? I had it on tonight and had no issues with it. I don't even know what videos you are on about:confused: I personally think its fine, I'm not a huge fan of changing something that was very good but its just as good now imo.

The site was in dire need of an update, but it looks terribly amateur at the moment. Looks like it was planned out by a developer rather than a designer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

More difficult to navigate, don't like it. Seems far more spread out than before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

oh one nice touch is the gossip page (i send it around work every day as very few have access to the internet in here) is a definite link address now, i can just go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/gossip now instead of having to go to the sports page and look for the link.

Can anyone find Mark Lawrenson's predictions on the new Beeb football site? Maybe Lawrenson's predictions got thrown out with the old site.

Nope they're still there....just have to dig for them now. If you go across to the right hand side to the heading 'Leagues and Competitions' and select Premier League...you'll see Lawro's mug at the top of the page.;)

Maddening alright , ...and the updates are still horribly slow

Don't like the way the fixtures are lumped together in a monthly block without any gap between the rounds either!

    Why dont goals have descriptions?

    Example

    1416:
    GOAL Arsenal 5-1 Blackburn - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    1412:
GOAL Arsenal 4-1 Blackburn - Mikel Arteta

    1516:
GOAL QPR 1-0 Wolves - Bobby Zamora

    1611:
GOAL West Brom 1-0 Swansea - Marc-Antoine Fortune

The Baggies are ahead when Jonas Olsson's corner finds its way to Marc-Antoine Fortune at the back post. He has time to take a touch before lashing home a low finish on the half-volley. But his side were not ahead for very long...

Used to have descriptions, some did today but most didnt.

Or am i missing something

My only problem with it is that the match scores are too far down the right hand side of the page if you've live text running meaning you have to scroll down to check them.

Better than the old site, but it's still a bit sh*t to navigate and has various other annoying things going on. Opportunity missed.

Everytime a website changes people complain and give out about it, saying it's not as good as the old one. Give it a week or two and you'll forget it was ever anyway different.

So true. This is from some feedback when the BBC did a redesign of their news section a while back.
I have worked in newspapers for nearly 35 years. At EVERY design change, we were flooded with letters and phone calls from people who hated the new look. If we spoke to any at length, we always found, without exception, that what they hated was not the new look but change.

At one such exercise, in 1995, we kept the names and contact details of those who had been upset and, five years later, at the next wholesale change, were tickled to discover that these same people sent much the same letters, complaining that they had been robbed of a design they loved (despite complaining that they hated it five years previously).

What I do not like is the video autoplaying when I first checked it out, that's a user experience no-no.

The yellow colour could be treated to make it less lurid.

Internet kept coming and going, requiring manual refresh.

Bring back the old design. Was a lot easier to get around and the live text was easier to load. They seem to have gone a tad to "flashy".

Updates are all over the place today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,370 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

    Really frustrating today.

I kept refreshing for ages because the update at he top of the page was timed at 1240, then I scrolled down and the next one was at 1535 and the one below that at 13-something before another below that at 15-something. They really need to sort this out, it's a proper joke now.
