Over the last few days it's been difficult to put the car into 1st gear when changing down. It can take a couple of tries. Slides in fine when stationary going from neutral to first. 1st to 2nd is very stiff too. Other changes further up are fine.

    Expensive job looming? It's a Mk3 Mondeo.

sounds more like a clutch problem.

    Changing down into first?
As in coming up to a set of lights on red, you go 4-3-2(or whatever) then into first, then stop?

    Is it petrol or diesel?

    Yes.

    It's a petrol.

The 2005 diesel Mondeo I had was sometimes less than interested in going into first without some more than usual encouragement, that was when stopped too.

    Yes.

    It's a petrol.
Stop changing down into first unless you get caught out by a really steep driveway or something.

Normal enough for a gearbox to be a bit "stiff" in cold weather. I'm guessing 1-2 isn't stiff anymore by the end of your trip?

Is there any oil in the gearbox? Could easily be a clutch issue too.

Common problem with the petrol Mondeo. It will almost certainly be the clutch at fault.

The girl who bought my Focus kept doing this, luckily me being a super salesman meant she wasn't going away without buying the car anyway

steep driveway, slowly moving but not stopped traffic, yield signs etc

steep driveway is the only good explanation for this, the other two are not

That's what 2nd gear is for. Any MK3 Mondeo has more than enough torque to pull away easily from a slow rolling speed. As is the case with anything I've ever driven, bar maybe a 1.6Tdi Octavia with delivery mileage on.

    I do it very often.
If I'm slowing down to the speed which is too low for second gear, I change down to first.
Generally speaking I'm trying not to drive at rev's lower than 2000rpm on petrol cars.
