A friend of mine has bought a '06 Primastar and asked me to service it and among other things I noticed there is oil in the exhaust pipe. I know this is not a good thing obviously but what's the likely cause. And is it going to be safe to drive in the meantime?

Turbo is the most likely culprit.

    Is it smokey under throttle?

Take off the inlet pipe to turbo and check shaft for excessive movement

Thanks Slidey. Yeah, it's fairly smokey - that's the first thing I noticed. I'll try checking the turbo in the morning. Where abouts is it?:o

    Follow the exhaust!

Think it is at the back of the engine on those. Will be awkward without a lift or a pit

Might not be something for an amateur like me so. I'll give him the bad news and see about getting someone more qualified than me to diagnose it.

Something else is the steering - it's not smooth, kinda skips in spots. Fluid reservoir is full so would the problem be the pump?

If the belt isn't slipping, and there is no leaks or foaming in the reservoir it could be the pump or the rack.

Hard to make the call from behind the keyboard

Ah that's grand Slidey - I'm not expecting a full diagnostic from a distance. Thanks again.
