Does anybody else here have experience hunting with Spinone's? I have a 10 month old dog and he is not exactly setting the world alight after the birds. He does hunt ditches but hasnt set on a bird yet. He is also entering cover sometimes though not with great enthusiam. Had a runner on Sunday and I brought him to where I saw it go into the ditch but he didnt seem to pick up the scent. He also missed a bird in a ditch that got up wild after we walked by. He is not gunshy and is picking up but not coming straight back with the bird although that is something I can work on with him, so not too worried about that. Are Spinones slow to mature? I was a bit disappointed he didnt go better on Sunday as there was a good number of birds around.

10 months is very young, my setter will be 2 in march and she is only hunting properly with the last 5-6 months or so, she should be a cracker next year

I wouldnt be expecting much from a 10 month old pup, once its showing a few signs i wouldnt worry too much

sorry to tell you wirehair but next season will poobably be much the same my lad was 2 in november and he did point a few birds this year but he bumped as many as far as i can tell your best bet is to keep showing him birds and more or less let him work out his range for senting and pointing by him self .one trainer i spoke to said all spins in uk and ireland came from itialan show stock back inthe 80s and thats why they might be slower to work but it will come, great to watch when its right nearly cried when my lad went solid first time
