Radio shows that cater to the worst of society

    Hi,

Just wondering how to phrase this. You know those radio and tv shows that cater to mostly an audience of undesirables with bottom of the barrel "discussion"? I am talking about the likes of the FM104 "Phoneshow" and that other one in Cork (on Red FM I think), maybe even Liveline fits the category. Also television shows like Jeremy Kyle - those type of shows.

It struck me in a taxi yesterday when the driver had the FM104 "phoneshow" on. There was a part of it where I think people just ring up about anything. Mostly nonsense by the sounds of it. However something annoyed me about that particular show. It was the patronising and insulting behaviour of the presenters toward their core audience - the "working class" and unemployable I presume. Obviously the listeners are a bit thick to realise it but the presenters were insulting them with mock Dublin accents and generally nasty comments about various parts of Dublin. It was insidious and in a way vicious stuff. Incredible that the listeners do not seem to realise the show is based on insulting their "group" in society so to speak. Go figure:confused:

But anyway the presenters of these shows seem reasonably intelligent themselves. I am just wondering what they think of the listeners to their shows really? I'd love to know what they say about contributers off the air. And do they genuinely believe shows like these give any benefit to society at all - because I cannot see how allowing criminals, petty thieves and armchair republicans on the air benefits anyone.

But maybe I am wrong and they do have a place.

I am ranting, that "conversation" I heard in the taxi got me being originally from one of the targeted areas myself.

And the so called "respectable" Liveline is not much better IMHO. Pisses me off when someone says "Your one of us Joe" Er no he is not and he is making more money in a year than people like you will make in a lifetime thanks to your loyal listening. Is Joe among his flock in Ballyfermot?

Anyway I'd love to see all these shows canned. Anyone agree?

Oh no, insulting the "undesirables" were they?

Mocking the "thick" "Working Class" and the "Unemployable" were they?

Oh no, who would do such a thing?

Good point. Maybe that's why it's popular.

Cynically aimed at morons and racists, Spar and Taxi drivers seem to have this filth on all the time.

What do you do if you are a presenter and are without talent? Get slurring midnight drunks to be your talent for you.

Yes, that is certainly the case with Joe Duffy, Man of da peopble n all dat when works for him.
If the daily advert was "Lyon's tea sponcering Liveline helping fund Joe's 380K a year RTE contract", listeners might take a different tone if this was hammered home.
