Got a call off a mate there. He has an 05 1.8 Mondeo. Before christmas he went to get it NCT'd and they wouldnt do it because it was too smokey. I have a generic OBD scanner and the fault it gave seemed to suggest the EGR after a bit of googling (cant remember what it was, been nearly 2 months). Fast forward to today, he had it with a mechanic who reckons the engine is knackered. The guy reckons the Duratec engines are sealed and a new one is the only option. Havnt dealt with Fords outside of this car myself but thats a new one on me, not to say he isnt right though. He told him 2nd hand was a bad idea too and a new engine would be €2700 plus labour . I'm guessing he just didnt want anything to do with it.

It's burning oil and smoking. So the questions are, any got an idea of what it could be and is there a decent Ford indy guy around Dublin for a 2nd opinion.

The good Doctor is also welcome to have a look see if he fancues it. :)

The 1.8 petrol in those Mondeos isn't the greatest Ford ever produced. Usually the 2004 and newer ones aren't as bad as the 01-03 ones though.

They can be rebuilt but there is a lot more time involved than most other engines.

They only get smokey when fully hot usually. Testing when cold solves the smoke problem but then the CO% is too high. I have found that there is a sweet spot with them in between being cold and hot where they will usually pass the CO% before getting fully warmed up which is when the smoke starts. You will have to have a friendly NCT tester to get it through that way though.

Hi,the ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol Is a good engine if looked after.A lot of the time if they haven't been serviced they can get smokey.Piston rings wear is a good starting point. Can't be got genuine as fords don't won't you at there short block, however parts can be got from motor factors. And piston ring replacement has been successful in the past.

We replaced a short block on a Garda car complete with new pistons, rings, rods, crankshaft. It will be cheaper than buying a complete engine.
