only 1 of 3 my Sky signals working

    Hello

I have the following problem and would be grateful for any advice.

A few years ago Sky installed a dish, and 2 boxes for me, one of which was sky+ box. Therefore there are 3 cables coming from the dish.

Maybe 18 months ago I cancelled the subscription and just used the Free To Air channels.

I recently went back to Sky with a single subscription as I wanted to get sky sports in. No multiroom. They sent me a new card.

In the weeks that followed I noticed only 1 of the 3 signals were working.

I have checked all the connections, but all I have is one cable that carries the signal.

I should be able to view FTA through the other decoder from the same dish that is feeding me the sky subscription.

Should I ring sky tech support? (I really dont like dealing with them!)

    Things you should know:
    1. I dont have a telephone line connected to the skybox, though I told them I did

    2. When I checked one of the cables that wasn't working there was a peculiar black granular/oily substance around the cable that hadnt been there previously.

    3. I have switched the decoders around to ensure they are both working. They are.

    Thanks for your time

So I assume no-one from Sky visited your home, installed a new dish etc?

I am not sure if Sky will now support your system as you did not pay for a new install and it's more than a year since you paid for an installation. -So I would say don't ring Sky

You seem to say you don't get a signal. Have you gone to each connection and measured the signal in the menu of the Sky box. (including the working one)

    Please post
    Number 1) Signal & Quality %
    Number 2) Signal & Quality %
    Number 3) Signal & Quality %
    How old is your dish?

Also can you get a photo of the dish from ground level at the end of the arm where the cables go into the dish? (If so attach the photo)

It looks as if the connection at the dish end might be damaged or not waterproofed and water is getting into the cable. You might get away with the same dish if it's quite new. You might just need a new cable between the dish and the room. However if you are going to pay someone to come out to do it for you, it's probably best to get a new dish at the same time.

You probably saved Sky's 50 Euro setup charge the second time you signed up. It might now cost you 100 Euro for new dish and two runs of cable or slightly more. Get a few quotes, use someone recommended.

And of course let us know how you get on

Thanks for taking the time to help zg3409, much appreciated

2 of the cables show as 'no sattelite signal is being received'

The other show signal strength about 80%, signal quality 50%.

Dish is about 5 years old

The dish is pretty near a gable end window and from there it looks as if all 3 cables are connected ok in to the lnb. I'll get up on a ladder and take a closer look tomorrow.

I'll try running a new cable between the receiver and dish myself to see if that solves my problem

Try just unplugging them one at a time until the working box stops working. You know the LNB connection and cable which is good then. Disconnect the others and move the working cable to all 4 positions.

If all 4 work then it is not a dish nor LNB problem but only cabling. This may save you buying cable you don't need or replacing a cable and not sorting the problem.

Be careful working on a ladder. Make sure someone holds it and don't drop tools on their head!

I made some new connections in to the receivers by snipping the existing terminations and refitting the f plugs.

This got one more signal back working.

Thats one upstairs and one downstairs working now. No recording facility yet, but I can live without that for now, I managed to do so for about 30 years without much heartache.

    Thanks again.
