Hi boys and girls today I was on the back roads of kilcullen and I'm pretty sure I was doing the rite speed limit but the van flashed me. Does this mean I was over the limit and got done or does it flash all cars? There was traffic goin the other way so is it even possible they where speeding. Have 5 points can't afford another :(

Should probably slow down and learn your lesson then...

It is possible it was the other side of the road, but not likely.

When you say "pretty sure" you were doing the right limit, do you think you could have been speeding?

You don't have to tell us the truth, but you should know yourself if it was justified

If every car is speeding, then yes

    The vans use flashes ?

The ones here all use IR.

I thought the go safe vans were the same - IR, no flash.

Hi OP. Could it have been a reflection of a headlights off the van?

Just passed one of the speed vans, was doin 100km/h on a 100km/h zone, i know cause i had cruise control on, spotted the van and a flash. there was a car behind me but how likely was it that it was them? i was fairly close when it flashed. i thought there was a bit of leeway too, pretty harsh if i get done. no one has answered though whether they only flash when someone is caught?

What are you learning exactly? The rules of the road, or how to break them without getting caught? With 5 points most people cop on and make an effort. Looks like you were caught and will be adding more points to your license. Insurers will be having a field day with you. And women get smaller premiums? Makes me ant to hurl. I have 0 points (but maybe i just haven't been caught :) )

I'm not suggesting you crawl along as you said in your sarcastic post, but atleast try to keep your speed down. You're either very unlucky, or breaking too many rules, which you needed to learn before being given a license in the first place.

This leads me to a question. Do you have a full license, and if not, was there a fully licensed driver in the car with you? I only ask, because you say you're still learning, but that cuts no cheese with me.

If you pass the static cams here in Germany sometimes they flash even if your under the speed limit, i've been told its to do with Calibration for the flash so the resulting picture is not under or overexposed.

Are you sure it was for speed depending on what Van it is I think they can also get you for no seat belt and other things. (May be wrong)

My car has an analogue Speedo in mph and a digital reading in kph. My car shows, and I saw an old Top Gear about 10 years ago (when it was good) and they proved that when your shows you are doing between 10-60kph , you are actually doing a bit more, but any speed over this is actually less than shows on your Speedo.

I tested this and when the needle is pointing directly at 100kph (60mph), the digital reading is about 95kph. So for the van to flash you must have been a fair bit over, as you have been given leeway by the van (5% as far as I'm aware), plus about the same from your Speedo!

    Nah:

    http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32000L0007:EN:HTML
2.3.7. the speed displayed must never be lower than the actual speed. Between speed V1, read on the speedometer and actual speed V2: there must be the following relationship with the test values specified in item 2.3.5 and between those values:

    0 <= (V1 - V2) <= 0,1 · V2 + 4 km/h.

Thanks for the info, well if i do get a fine i'll have to carry car to garage cause i know for a fact i was doin 100k on the button with analogue, i know this cause a car flashed a bit before the van so i put the speed control at exactly 100k not above. my guess so is either the car behind me was speeding and had just caught up to me or some sort of test shot.

i'll post back with an update if i actually do pick up a fine, again what i'm saying is truth why would i come here and rant on about something that was a lie

I believe the camera's can detect your speed at quite a distance (a few hundred metres) so if you had been a bit over the limit before you saw the camera (even 1km will do it) then your done for. A friend of mine was done for doing 101km in a 100km zone by these new camera vans from "Go safe" I think. At least the guards would give you a 5 to 10% buffer zone!

Hypothetically. If you see one of these vans the SECOND its in visual range and you break hard will it detect your speed. Or can these detect your speed the second your in visual range? IE if you are far enough from them can you jam on in time and not be nailed?
I have no penalty points by thee way just wondering :D

His info is wrong, he's got is ar$eways. Analogue speedometers worldwide are designed to over-read not under read your true speed. Your true speed will always be lower than the indicated speed (assuming you haven't got bigger wheels on).

Keithclancy has already quoted the formula used.
If your analogue speedo showed 100km/h then your true speed couldn't have been any higher than 96km/h.

What type of van was it, was is a Garda van or one of the Go-Safe vans. Are you 100% sure it was even a speed van at all and not just an innocent van parked up, with reflections bouncing off the back windows?

I was flashed on the N4 despite doing the speed limit. Havent heard anything. That was 3 months ago.

It was a speed van just inside one of the designated areas, and it was a small light came on as i passed on top lefthand side of the back of the van, in two weeks i'll know if i was speeding or not anyway, i could possibly have been over the limit a km out but not much closer than that cause i watch my speed very carefully, especially on that road
