Car Insurance Question

My son is doing his driving test in a few weeks, he is currently insured in my car accompanied by me with Aviva, (this was a 6 month deal by Aviva & included some driving lessons)but his insurance lapses a week before the test. Aviva want 800 euro to insure him until July when my policy lapses. I only want to insure him if possible for the next 3 weeks untill he does his test & then we can look at all the options. Does anyone know if there are any insurance companies that will insure him for a few weeks or if I cancel my insurance policy completely with Aviva & go with someone that will insure us both at reasonable price can I get a refund from Aviva on the 6 months I have left on my policy. Barring that could I get insurance for just one day while he does the test, he wants to do it in my car as he`s been driving this for over a year.

    Hi

I'm not aware of any companies that do short term insurance in Ireland.

What I would suggest is ringing around a few brokers to see if they can do any better. You could pay monthly over the year which would work out cheaper than paying the 800e over the few months you have left on your current policy.

    Problem with this option is:

    1) You would loose the years no claims bonus you would have earned on your current policy with Aviva.

2)You would have to pay a deposit to start up a policy with a different insurer. Typically this would be about 20% of the premium.

    3) There would be a cancellation fee with Aviva as well as your new insurer when you do cancel as you are not sticking with the terms of the policy which are based on a yearly premium.

    4) You may find it difficult to find an insurer who would make it worth your while to switch, even with a higher premium however, it may still be cheaper if you are paying monthly and then cancel once he's done his test.

Do you pay monthly or in full at the moment?

    Hi there,

I'm just wondering how you fared out with this policy, we're looking at it for my nephew just concerned about the price of the premiums after the 6 month period.
