whats my car worth

    i have been thinking of selling my petrol 1.4 peugeot 306 and getting a diesel. as i will be doing 270 miles a week in a few weeks time for going to college again should i sell my car and get a diesel or should i just keep getting the train up and save my money. I would be going from macroom to thurles taking the train is the same as driving around 1 hout 45 minutes. so should i sell my car and get a diesel or keep it and get the train and drive up once a month.

    the car i have is a 2000 1.4 petrol 306 with 110k miles timing belt done at 101k 3 new tyres 1 nearly new tyre tracking done last week, it has a hitch it has peugeot 14 inch alloys. i also have a 1998 306 with the head gone that i would sell with it, it has a new clutch 135kish miles 4 good standard wheels.

    if i was to sell the 306 what would i get for it?
    should i sell the other 306 with it or send it to the scrap yard?
    should i keep the 306 its about half the tax of a diesel the train ticket is €25ish return its a 8 minute walk to college.

    I'd figure out what fuel consumption you would be getting from your current car first OP. Then work out how much it's costing in fuel, tax and insurance relative to the cost of the train ticket.

    If neither of these are working you could look into a diesel but, remember a diesel at your end of the budget is most likely gonna be a rough 'un. Be careful you don't end up buying a lemon.

    when i drive up in my car now i get around 42mpg from it. i have a light foot sometimes.

    i was thinking that it would be rough one alright

    it costs me around €40 euro petrol for driving up and down and driving into college everyday. but i do like getting the train as i find the motorway boring

    42mpg from a 1.4 is excellent. I think you would be mad to change a perfectly reliable car that has timing belt done etc for a higher mileage, higher tax diesel that will only give a few more mpg.

    Now it's up to you really as to which you prefer more or if the car is worth it. 42mpg, 1.4 road tax, no depreciation makes that a very cheap car to run man.:)

    No brainer, keep it! You're getting great mpg and you know the car is reliable, and its got a new timing belt. Everyone wants cheap diesels these days,they are expensive to buy and cheap ones are ****e!

    Ya I agree with Ye that I will keep it as the tax would be about double the price and the mpg won't change much. And when I'm not in college I only spend 30 euro a week on petrol. I'm better off with the car that I know than one that could have some problems
