    Sup all!

Could use some help with an issue I have here...

I have an old Compaq D310 computer that nobody knows how to access (all forgotten passwords and ancient accounts of previous users). I want to restore to factory defaults (i.e. use a restore function to format the drive and reinstall the Windows that it already has on it). I did this with a Windows 7 PC yesterday, and wanted to do it with thie D310 running Windows XP Pro.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find the restore option. After some research I am getting the impression that the D310 came about before restore partitions were put onto these machines so, unless I am reading it wrong, apparently I need some kind of recovery disk.

How do I go about getting one of these recorvery disks? Is it something I can download and burn to a disk? If so, where can I get it? Do I even need it?

You'll need XP install media, a recovery disk is for troubleshooting.

    According to this,
    http://www.ehow.com/how_8464629_factory-restore-compaq-d310.html
she comes/came with a recovery disc, back in the day.

So I guess if you don't have it, she's lost somewhere in the ether, lol.

In that case, you have 2 options.
    1. Take out the hdd and put it in (a caddy) another machine as secondary storage to view/backup any files. Then grab an xp pro cd from somewheres and re-install from scratch.
    2. Grab a win xp pro cd from somewheres and re-install from scratch, forgetting about any possible data loss.

You can order a proper recovery disk here for 30 bucks if you're that set on the idear. ;)

TBH, I'd just hit up some of your mates for an XP cd. Someones bound to have one lying around.

No need to take out the hard drive, run a Linux LiveCD/LiveUSB and copy the stuff you want onto an external drive with it.
