    I mostly buy components from here;

    http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/

    For AVR chips and other peculiar parts, ebay is where I look. As for actual bricks and mortar shops, the only place I've really found is Maplins, which is fairly expensive in comparison to buying online.

    Yeah if you're looking for something locally your options are from limited to non-existent.

    If there's a maplins near you they can have a good selection of basics but are incredibly expensive.

    These guys are actually local to me:

    http://www.chip.ie/

    And according to the website they will deliver. Not a huge range and still expensive but better then maplins and of course it's an Irish company.

    As mentioned above bitsbox has low postage and good service. They are a bit limited in what they have. A few other places I've used in no particular order:

    http://www.rapidonline.com/
    http://www.technobotsonline.com/
    http://robot-electronics.co.uk/
    http://www.solarbotics.com/
    http://www.tme.eu

    And ebay.

    I'd definitely back that. I have a like-minded friend who was on holidays over in New York recently, he said Radio Shack was like heaven :P But I'll have to check out this chip.ie , I hadn't heard of them before.

    We had a couple of Radio Shacks here about 30 years ago.
    Radionics in Rialto are handy enough.

    Courier is about 8 Euros if you don't want to visit the trade counter.
