    Guys,

Is there anyone(independent) you can contact to come and check out your house and make recommendations on what you can do to make it more energy efficient?

We dont have alot of spare money, but what we have we would be willing to invest in our house to save on bills in the long run.

    we are spending

    €250-300/2months on electricity
    €1500 - €2000/year on heating oil
on top of this we burn coal and wood

so you can see why i'd be intersted to get a 'survey' done.

    Ta

    Get an energy advisor in.
We dont have alot of spare money,...

With these bills being payed you have.

Is that an 'architect designed' house b.t.w.?

There might be some help available from the RIAI, see the last paragraph here:

The ESB halo scheme did that. If you google energy efficency in the home you can learn a lot that needs to be done.

For example increase the insulation in the attic to 450mm

    As joey and Heinbloed say.

First off is Insulation, you can never have enough of it. External is very good but expensive. A cheaper option is to dry line the inside of the external walls but with re-decorating costs I wonder.

Next is the loft. At least 200mm thick insulation and if the loft is going to be boarded make sure it's put down on battens as deep as the insulation. Compacted insulation reduces the efficiency of it.

Next would be controls for your heating system if you dont have them. You would be amazed what a room stat would do to your bills.
