Class Detention Still Legal?

Okay, so my geography teacher insists on keeping the whole class back an extra 15 minutes on a monday because a few troublemakers can't keep their mouths shut.

"collective responsibility" or something like that.

Anyway my school rules state that only year-heads have permission to give detention after school, and they must give 24 hours prior notice to parents.

I wouldn't mind staying back if I was given notice, (sure it's an annoyance, but i can live with that) but i get a lift home from school, and it's very annoying to walk 45 minutes in the dark carrying a 10 stone bag, a PE bag, and an art folder.

Are teachers even allowed to give class detention? without notice?

I explained my situation to him, and he told me that he knows I'm a good student, and that i didn't do anything wrong, but it's "collective responsibility"

    what should i do?

Talk to your principal about it. Notice has to be given always, and if you're definitely doing nothing wrong and he's punishing the class for what a few are doing, that's fairly serious. If your school has a student's council, definitely bring it up there.

If your school code of conduct says only Year Heads can give detention, then take it up with your Year Head.

Is the student 'code of silence' operating as regards identifying these dossers? If it is, I don't have a lot of sympathy, but if the teacher knows who the small group are, then it's very unfair (and counter-produictive) that the rest of you are kept back.

nah, no stupid codes or anything like that, the teacher knows exactly whos doing it but claims because of them, he's not letting anyone go until he finishes his lesson,

if it happens again i'm complaining,

    thanks everyone

In most schools teachers are allowed keep you back for 15 minutes without notice but if it's over 15 minutes, you have to get 24 hours notice!
If only year heads are able to give detention, talk to him/her about it as you haven't done anything.

That's completely unfair and the teacher can not seriously think that 'collective responsibility' is a just way to punish mis-behaving students. You should really bring up the matter with your year head or else ask a parent to bring up the issue. It's not fair to punish everyone and is also impinging on your other subjects. No teacher should support or use a system like that.
