So I rang up the bank just there because I was having trouble accessing my online account and found out that I owe then £450

Apparently it was an overdraft that I wasn't aware of. I left the country in Aug and was told it's been overdrawn since October + ridiculous daily charges which have been racking up!

Lucky for me I'm in a position I can pay it off when I get paid next week. I'll be broke for the month, but out of the debt that I was blissfully unaware of 2 hours ago.

I've never been the best with finances and this is my wake up call. Anything like this ever happen to the lovely people of AH?

Would you consider yourself good with money?

That wasnt an over draft it was a tax on the air you breath, introdcuded in the last budget, you will get one of them deductions for around the same sum every 3 months directly from your bank account....

oh and welcome home btw ;)

I am nowhere near home, hence actually having money to pay it off! The worst part is, I spent 25 mins on a long distance call and I didn't even get my online account details sorted because I answered one of my security questions wrong :o

I am so good at personal finance. I've never been overdrawn, never taken more than a month to pay my credit cards, have always had money in the bank and haven't withdrawn for my savings account since I opened it 6 years ago, keep my debt minimal. And I lived a pretty good lifestyle on a and low paying job and could afford to go back and do my postgrad in Canada this year.

I r proud of my money smarts.

Moved to England for uni but couldn't open a student bank account (which have no overdraft fees) having not lived in the UK for 3 years previous.

Got a letter one day saying I owed them £275. I had gone overdrawn and they charged me £75 for going overdrawn and £10 per day it wasn't rectified. I had come home for a few weeks so hadn't used the account, or checked my balance or anything.

£275 pound for going overdrawn. By 20p.

I'm currently living in my Irish overdraft. I'll pay it off when I qualify.

The banks are sneaky though, I've numerous bank accounts for various purposes and they put an overdraft on them all without me knowing it. Smells a bit like sharp practise to be honest and the charges are definetely excessive.

That's exactly what happened me! Just pay it off before the fees keep adding up! Although, this is the kick up the hole I need to get my saving in gear!

Yes, only one black spot on my credit record which I think has been wiped off now and one run-in with a debt collector

Being not but a poor student for a number of years I went for almost a year with only €0.30 in my account so didn't take notice of the statements I was getting in the mail until a few months later when I finally opened one to notice they'd charged me €10 for the account. Well that was my weeks living expenses gone right there. :D

Shame you're not here. If you were a taxpayer here, you'd OWN the bank!

How much did you initially owe them. I left my bank of Ireland account with 2 cents in it. 4-6 months later i got letter saying i owed them 16 euros.

There were a some charges of about 28 cents which made my account overdrawn by 2 euro, then every week there was an interest charge. I paid I think 800% interest on that 2 euro.

    800% - Imagine earning 800% interest every 6 months.

If I were you I'd tell the bank to Fúck off, close your account and then open a new account in a different bank

    problem solved

It's legal to do this as well and they can't make you pay it back.
    Just look at Sean Fitzpatrick,
