Thailand Visa - Entering from Malaysia

    Hi guys,

I'm heading over to Australia in a few weeks and will be stopping off in Malaysia on the way. I plan on travelling by land to Thailand (Surat Thani), and staying for a couple of weeks.

What is the normal visa period when entering Thailand by land? I've been a few times before and vaguely remember that by air its 30 days but I think by land its only 14? I plan on probably staying longer than 2 weeks and want to avoid a visa run if possible.

I've found a few conflicting reports online, can anyone confirm how long the visa is for?

Also, if you want to get it extended can you get this done in Malaysia for free?

    Thanks!

I got 14 days when entering from Malaysia in 2011 at the same point that you'll be crossing at. They don't charge for the 14 day visa.

What about flying?, they'll give you 30 days.

Careful if you use Air Asia as items were stolen from my check on baggage on an Air Asia flight.

ya you will only get 15 days travelling by land into thailand, 30 days if you fly, your best getting a visa from thai embassy/consulate before you go that would be good for 60 days.

If you are coming from Malaysia you can go to the Thai embassy in Penang. Most hostels will organise this for you.

Fly in and go by land out. You should get a flight from KL to Surat for about €20 (you will need a return though to get on the plane - onward ticket etc,). That will actualy be cheaper than stopping in Penang and getting the visa.
There's not really a lot going on in Malaysia between KL and the Thai Border.

As I seen a post somewhere that flying from malaysia to Surat Thani only gives 15 days, and landing in bangkok gives you 30. Is there any truth in this?

    Thanks
