Recording a horn section

    Hi guys,

    I have a session next weekend that will involve recordng a horn section (tumpet, trombone, sax) for a sort of pop/ska band.

    The mics I have available to me are: AKG Solidtube, Audio Technica 4033, Beyer 201, Beyer m160 x2, AKG 451 x2, Rode NT5 x 2, AKG 414, Shure sm57, Shure sm58, T-bone rb-500, Senn e945 x 2, Senn e602II.

    I have never recorded anything like this before, has anyone advice on micing techniques? Was thinking of using a the 451s in a coincident pair maybe 5 or 6 feet back and then close micing each instrument with some dynamics.

    Ribbons and dynamics were always the Brass mics of choice - you wouldn't believe how loud these feckers will be .

    The 'duller' ribbons/dynamics help calm the 'parp' a bit.

    I'd guess the 451s probably won't be first choice.

    WIll you have time to experiment? If it was my first time doing brass trio, I would give them an unbilled hour for setting up. You will have to find a nice spot in the room for the brass first, mic it up second. This is my mic preference:

    AKG Solidtube- probably not much use.
    Audio Technica 4033- excels close miking solo trumpet. Relatively wide cardioid, leakage might be an issue for you.
    Beyer 201- great for anything, pity you don't have 3!
    Beyer m160- great and they're cardioid, worth trying as close mic.
    AKG 451 x2- I agree with you: ensemble/ room mics XY @ 2m assuming they're cardioid caps.
    Rode NT5 x 2- too bright, not good for brass.
    AKG 414- Which one? They vary. Always a solid performer, I imagine it'd be a bit bright tough.
    Shure sm57- Has the mid boost, disgusting for brass.
    Shure sm58- ditto.
    T-bone rb-500- These are actually quite good, when they work! Be aware of fig. 8 patter when setting up.
    Senn e945- Very good, worth trying in close.

    For pop/ ska compress the close mics quite a bit. Believe it or not, the BF76 in PT works very well here!

    Cool I think I will go with the two e945 and the 201 for the close mics. Might have to experiment with the distant mic, will try the 451s in the x/y there are other options there maybe mono on the distant or M/S with the M160 and the RB500 or something.
