Diploma Mech Eng, looking to go for Degree?

    Hi,

Have been looking at the options available in DCU, DIT, ITT, Sligo etc. It's all very confusing. I received my diploma back in 2000, so I guess I'm a mature student. (It seems that a lot of info on mature students assumes the student has only leaving cert). I believe there is a refreshers course if there is a 10 year gap?

Anyone else returned after so long?

Do I have to wait until September?

I'm thinking that Dublin colleges might be the closest as I live in Navan. Is Mechatronics a better option in terms of employment, as opposed to Mechanical Eng?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Kev.

    I would say most likely.

Would Blanchardstown or Dundalk suit you?

I'd say you would get exemption from Year 1 and possibly Year 2 of the degree programme. Best option is to give them a ring and see what your options are.

If you do mechanical some course incorporate mechatronics and control theory, I would advise doing it that rather than completely specialising in it. Mechanical will leave you open to go into alot of different areas including mechatronics but mechatronics will only allow you to go into one industry.

I would advise making contact with the heads of the courses you are interested in. If you have experience in the field it will def help. Yes it looks like you will have to wait to Sept but as you are still gathering info sounds like this may suit you.

Choose another course if you want to get a job (in Ireland anyway)!

Just a quick check on Intel's site shows they are looking for Engineers.

I do understand what you mean. Sometimes it seems as if there's nothing out there for people in our field.

Thanks for all the replies. Still trying to figure out which route to go. No rush I guess.

@brownacid: Yeah, I would prefer Mechanical myself. (wasn't available in ITT when I was there, only Manufacturing degree).
