Trying to map network drive

    Hi,
I am trying to map a network drive to another machine on the same network. I can ping the machine, I can remote connect to the machine. We are on the same subnet. However, when I try to map tp the machine, I can't see it on the network. When I try to do "net use" into the machine, I get:

    System error 53 has occurred.

    Any ideas?

Or any suggestion to a windows 7 forum that might help out.

    Thanks.

is File and Print sharing installed on the other machine.

If so is the File and print sharing inbound firewall rule enabled?

Your firewall may be blocking icmp requests. Are you using the windows firewall, or some other one?

windows firewall on both client and server. What would be good rules to look for on client and server?

Also, I can get another machine to connect to it. There are quite a lot of firewall rules for both machines - what would be a good way of comparing them?

Yeah, I'm having terrible trouble mapping drives over wifi with W7. Have you tried mapping using a cable connection? I've managed sucessfully to map my networ drives using the LAN.

Control Panel, Firewall, advanced, select network card, and then try this.

    icmp-settings.JPG

When you shared the folder, is it set up to be shared by anyone? Windows 7 has a home group feature you may need to tweak. Also check what your network type is. Some restrictions if not a home network.

That's because you have your wireless adapter and lan interface have different firewall profiles. Right click on the File and Print firewall rules. properties, Advanced and enable for Private and/or Pubic although be careful as if you have your laptop connected to a public WiFi then you could be vulnerable.

sounds like permissions on the share,

are you on the same domain or do you have a user account on both machines with the same username and passwords?

    try use:

    net use * \\servername\sharename /user:servername\username password

I don't think I have a domain. I go to Control Panel \ System and Security \ System and I see Workgroup but not a domain. I only have a user account on my machine. But I know a login for the other machine. when I try to net use into that, I get

    System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

have you actually got the folder shared out? what version of windows are you using on both machines.

create a user on the computer you're trying to map to with the exact same details as the computer you're trying to map to.

to me it sounds like a mixture or credentials and windows firewall, but if you've shared the folder properly from the machine it will automatically create the rule within windows firewall

A friend in the same work group was able to connect to the shared folder I am trying to connect to.

Even when I turn off my firewall I still cannot connect. Could be something to do with WINS / Netbios?

no because you have the ability to ping it.

what happens when you try and map a drive from that machine to yours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,023 ✭✭✭Tim Robbins

When I try to map I get the message.

..there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose..

    Diagnose yield nothing.

When I click more details I get

    0x80004005

    Unspecified error

Note: I have check the network adapters. They are the same as my friend's who can connect.

The same as when I try to map.

Do you have a password set for your local Windows 7 account? By default you cannot connect to shares unless you have a local password.

The same as when I try to map.

I ran nbtstat from my machine (which doesn't work) and my friend's which does work...

There is a difference in our NetBIOS Local Name Table. His workgroup is in his; mine is not in mine. Would that have anything to do with it?

    Thanks

It may be the settings on the host computer. Can you connect to other network shares. Can you set up a shared folder on another computer, or the same computer to see what happens?

Client is Windows 7, Server is Windows 2008 R2. But I get the same error trying to connect to another Windows 7 machine. However, both the Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 machine can connect to me no problem.

    @MarkR
No, as stated I can't connect to another machine. It's not just this one.

    An answer...

After checking link layer settings, all my network settings, trying with IPV 6 enabled /disabled, resetting my workgroup, the answer was Remote connect into the machine I couldn't access a shared file from and then got that machine to access some shared files on my machine. While it was accessing my machine, I had a look at it in computer mgt / shared folders / sessions It obviously just flushed something out.

Thanks to all who helped out here.

Note while diagnosing the problem I checked I could connect to the share using Ubuntu. Which of course gave me no problems :-)
