Advice needed - issue with bathroom tap

    Hi all,

The cold tap in my en-suite bathroom has stopped working. It's been troublesome for a while:

    * Wouldn't turn on, and after applying pressure only turned on a dribble
    * Now it turns easily enough, to a point, but no water appears at all

I thought I might have damaged it when applying pressure so I took off the handle of the hot tap and put that on instead (the handles are white plastic which just pull off), but no joy.

Could anyone suggest a) what might be wrong, and b) a method to fix it?

    Thanks in advance

...have you tried turning it off and turning it back again?

The spindle of the tap needs to be repaired or replaced. Remove the tap head and the brass body on top of the tap is the spindle.

Thanks - is that a difficult job? I'm not very handy but keen to learn.

no. Remove the top of the tap head below this is a screw.Remove the screw.Turn off the water in the hot press. There is (2) 3/4 inch valves with red wheel handles in your hot press by turning these to the left will turn of the water.Drain the water at basin to be sure its turnned off.use an adjustable spanner to remove the spindle by turning to the left.
Bring the spindle to your plumbing provider and ask him to give you the same or similar one.
Then put the new spindle in the tap and tighten it.Put the tap head and screw on to the spindle.Put the cover back on the tap. Turn back on the water.
    You have repaired the spindle.

Excellent, thanks. Plumbing provider - would Woodies carry what I'm looking for or would somewhere like Chadwicks be required?

I think I seen them in woodies alright. But I think the likes of chadwicks would be a safer bet and cheaper.Run through the routine before you buy the spindle.Turning off water removing tap head ect.You could even remove and put back on the spindle thats there at present. It will just be a formality with he new one then.

Be careful to hold the tap against your efforts to loosen the guts otherwise you could end up turning the whole tap and loosening the connection below the bath, if this connection was made before the bath was fitted it could prove a nightmare to re-tighten. :o
