Tried to turn on Imac after a power cut but its not booting up. Its making a clincking sound and displaying a folder with a question mark. This happened once before but I eventually got it back working. However its not responding this time. I have a lot of stuff which I never got around to backing up. Any help much appreciated. Are there any decent repair shops on the northside of Dublin

Clicking sounds and Flashing folder/Question mark point to Hard Drive failure.
Put in your system disk and boot from it. Then run Disk Utility on the HD to see what's going on. Depending on iMac model, you may be able to replace the HD yourself, but data retrieval can be one expensive hobby.

Unfortunately I don't have the original discs, I installed snow leopard a couple of years ago. There is a disc already in the drive at the moment.

SL or any retail disk is ok. If it is in the machine, restart and hold down the "c" key. You should get an option for Apple Hardware test, AFAIR, and run that or Disk Utility on the HD

To force eject the CD/DVD keep the mouse button pressed while restarting your Mac (keep pressed until its ejected).
