It was 223, therefore head shot was taken.

I wasn't sure, but when I felt the smell I new I couldn't. Some people do eat them but it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

Never seem them in the wild, but heard you could nearly hunt the old lads by following the smell off them. Heard the young lads are as good if not better than lamb.

    Good shot.

    Well done.

Hard to describe just how really bad they can smell.

Though that the young ones actually are "very" good to eat, would agree they are better than lamb.

You know I was actually planning on starting a thread on this in the next few days. Long story short, I might be getting a chance of a goat this summer. So whats the story with shot placement? I guess its safe to say 223 to the head will work.

What range was that at zlezlius? Whats bullets did you use aswell..??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭mister gullible

Hi Zlezlius, did you kill him for pest control or food?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

goat tend to smell in the breeding season because they role around in there own crap and spray there piss onto them selves to atract females . pub up over way had a head stuffed and when the hot weather came the smell put the pub out , eventually thery got rid if the head .

noice buck there im hoping to knock a few this year . if you hunting goat for food try to bag a young female or young male , and there yummy!

I use a .270 to shoot goats. They are a hardy animal and the bucks heads are made for ramming one another so even within the head shot, placement is critical.

I shot one behind the ear with my .270 at the end of the summer. The bullet did not exit through the thickest part of the skull on the way out.

I have a.223, it's a capable round, but that's not what it was designed for. I would go .243 and up.

So I take it when your shooting goats its head shots all the way..??

    Generally no.
It would mostly be neck shots.

If a goat was facing away from me and I was off the bi-pod then I would possibly go for a head-shot.

You want to act like you are shooting a deer. They a a similar sized animal and deserve the same respect. For that reason I would say the .223 isn't the best calibre for the task.

An animal this size takes a bit of knocking:

    I'm 6"3" by the way.

and this was the one behind the ear.
    As I say the 130gr didn't exit:

It was roughly 80 yards. I used Hornady v-max 55gr. Took the head shot with 223 , just to make sure, couse some lads saying that you should be using deer caliber on them and I'm not going to argue about it. Havn't said that 80 yard head/neck shot with 223 will knock them down without a doubt.

Hi Zlezlius, did you kill him for pest control or food?
My shooting buddy said he was eating goat couple times before (he was with me that morning), so I decided to try aswell. Smell made me change my mind straight away:(...

i'd say using the right bullet would have as much bearing on the job as calibre i certainly wouldn't be trying to knock them over with 55grns of v-max a good soft point would be a better job imho

We've about 30 wild goat not too far from us.There used to be about 60ish but they were culled. They are impossible to catch, a friend told me he found 1 in his barn and he went in to catch him, the goat done the MATRIX lol. He charged for him,he was ready to catch it by the horns but the goat ran and rebounded itself of the wall and straight by him. Supposed to be very unlucky to shoot a goat

    Found this on suitable calibres:
For Feral Goats DARDNI advises use of a minimum calibre of .236 with a bullet weight of 100grains to be used.

BTW,if you want one of their skulls for trophies.Be prepared to leave it outside for at least four plus months.Goats horns unlike deer antlers are living and have a blood supply in them.Ergo there are veins, and whatnot in there that needs to rot out,so its better just to let nature take her course with these fellahs.Otherwise your house is going to smell like a badly run slaughter house.

My mate left a huge one lying out, unfortunately it was beside a burn and the water ruined the horns... :(
