    Hey guys

i dont post here much but i have a bit of a mind boggler and i was hoping ye could help me?.

Heres the deal... Last year my brother got a new car and gave me his old one which is a 2001 ford focus 3 door 1.4. I got the money saved up for insurance and all that jazz, but recently my mother said she would buy that car off me and i get a lower litre car because the 1.4 will be heavy on fuel.

I have looked at polo 1.0 and corolla 1.3 litres and all that but i was wondering would ye guys keep the 1.4 and run it or get a smaller car. The 1.4 is basicially like new and i got a spoiler and foglights for it to 'modify' it.

Taking into account the recent increase in fuel prices and all that.

By the way as you can guess im learning to drive so thats the reason why im asking :)

    Please help

You'll save feck all if anything by changing down to a 1 litre.

There's a lot more to fuel economy than just engine size. Keep the focus, they're a grand reliable car. I learned to drive in one!

What's the difference in insurance? the focus is a low risk car. You probably wouldn't save all that much at all by changing down. You're simply not going to save a lot on petrol, that's for sure. If that's the main reason then don't bother.

As for insurance, you'll have to ring around to as many brokers and insurance companies you can find in the phonebook and get the best quote. Forget online quoting systems.

Well I have to go on my own insurance as my mother and father have their own car and there's no point insuring me under my mother as I have my own car and it will be sitting there other wise. My father is a taxi driver so he can't. Theres no difference in insurance to be fair. But it ls just me being paranoid over petrol.

If that's the case then just leave it. I wouldn't change anyway:)

Ya your right :) I heard this thing about tax where it has been.off the road that you have to pay from the day the tax expired till now if it is declared back on the road

Keep the car and pay your insurance by the month if you'll end up broke. A 1.4 won't be bad on juice, drive it right and you will be fine. :)

When I got my car all I had to do was bring the tax form down to the garda station and have them sign off that it was off the road. No need to back date the tax if it's been off the road.

I heard that there is some law that the goverment brought out or the RSA not sure that if you have the car off the road for example 09/10 and put it back on the road on the 02/12 then you have to pay for the tax from the date in 2010 to 2012

Yeah, I just looked it up there, seems to be true! I did mine in September so it wasn't true at the time!

It isn't clear from the article whether it's been brought into effect yet though.
