Browser on Android running slowly. Locale or other issue?

The Android Browser on two devices I own just won't load pages when I use the device in Ireland (on Eircom network), but just tears along when I am in the US. Is there some carrier or locale related issue I should be looking at with this? Diagnostic thoughts?
